Join the Materials Engineer, Cell Electrode Role at Tesla

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer to develop electrode materials and scale their manufacturing processes for our cutting-edge battery cell production lines.

What To Expect
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to Tesla's world-class manufacturing capabilities. You will support the development and ramp-up of dry electrode manufacturing for Tesla’s battery cells in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Responsibilities

  1. Perform hands-on material characterization of electrode properties, including electrochemical, electrical, and mechanical performance, as well as defect analysis.
  2. Lead failure analysis and execute DOEs to identify root causes of electrode defects.
  3. Develop and standardize material characterization methods for cross-functional implementation.
  4. Analyze large datasets to evaluate the impact of electrode properties on downstream processes and battery performance.
  5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure dry electrode processes meet production targets.
  6. Drive development and scale-up of innovative manufacturing processes to improve battery performance, reliability, quality, or cost.
  7. Develop and manage PFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvements and ensure robust process control.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Materials, Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in battery cell development, materials characterization, process development, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with electrode material characterization techniques (SEM, EDS, XRF, FTIR, XPS, TGA, electrochemical testing, etc.).
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as Python, SQL, JMP.
  • Experience working with powders and electrode materials in a production setting; familiarity with PAPR and respirators.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals and practical manufacturing process development skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Compensation

Expected salary range: $84,000 - $162,000 annually plus stock awards and benefits. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and other factors.
