Job description

Role Description

Form Energy is hiring a Staff Materials Engineer to join our world-class Cathode Engineering team. Our team combines experts in Materials, Battery, Test, and Process engineering to understand, design, and validate Form Energy's iron positive electrodes.

In this position, you will collaborate with the Electrode Prototyping team to deepen the understanding of how processes impact material properties and performance. Your experience with scaling relevant processes (such as dry or wet mixing, calendaring, or lamination) will enable you to drive our cathode to full-scale product readiness. You will characterize, test, and create specifications for our product to inform large-scale decisions, working closely with Supply Chain, R&D, Manufacturing, and other engineering teams. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and grow a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and a meaningful mission.

What you'll do:
  1. Collaborate with Process & Equipment Engineering teams to provide early feedback on manufacturing scale-up, including supporting validation of powder handling & mixing processes.

  2. Set product & process specifications by analyzing complex datasets and making data-driven decisions.

  3. Characterize electrode materials before and after testing in collaboration with internal material experts and external vendors, developing characterization techniques as needed.

  4. Design, execute, and interpret electrochemical tests on cathodes in large- and lab-scale test vehicles and Form Energy field-deployed batteries.

  5. Prioritize safety when creating material specifications for electrode components, linking properties to product performance and understanding electrochemical mechanisms.

  6. Develop characterization methods for specifications that can be transferred into quality control metrics in manufacturing.

  7. Mentor, guide, and support team members with your expertise, with the potential to formally manage as an individual contributor.

What you'll bring:
  • 7+ years of experience in electrochemically-focused materials engineering.

  • Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Deep understanding of developing processes such as wet and dry mixing, calendaring, roll-to-roll processing, or extrusion.

  • Experience in building property-performance relationships for batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, or other electrochemical systems, especially in deployed or market-ready products.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, capable of engaging at all organizational levels.

  • Skills in supplier operations and relationship management.

  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally approximately 20% of the time.
