Primary Purpose Of This Position
Fill customer orders and assemble shipments of fabricated bar, warehouse bar, and other materials for dispatch to customers and suppliers. Receive and unload incoming materials from suppliers. Locate materials into inventory storage, staging areas, and work areas.
Essential Job Functions
- Identify steel shapes, sizes, and mill tolerances.
- Locate materials as trained and instructed.
- Arrange bars or mesh according to yard map, cut lists, and shop drawings.
- Load/unload trailers, rail cars, customer vehicles, and machines.
- Identify errors or discrepancies in cut lists and shop drawings early in fabrication.
- Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, jib cranes, conveyors, and transfer equipment to move materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
- Attend all required meetings.
- Work scheduled hours reliably at assigned locations.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic involving whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.
- Ability to understand and follow semi-complicated verbal and written instructions.
- Effective communication skills with vendors, co-workers, supervisors, and managers.
- Ability to work under periodic supervision, setting priorities for job completion.
- Skill in using measuring tools such as auto measurers, tape measures, or rulers.
- Ability to pass a skills test covering shop drawing interpretation, fractional calculations, and basic geometry.
- Interpret and utilize cutting lists, shop orders, and drawings.
- Use a computer for managing cut-lists and inventory.
- Demonstrate pride in workmanship, attention to detail, and safety consciousness.
- Operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely, understanding industry and company hand signals.
- Perform minor mechanical tasks on machines.
- Follow inventory procedures and multi-task effectively.
Physical Demands
- Stand frequently and walk continuously during the shift.
- Sit only during breaks and lunch.
- Lift weights up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally.
- Carry weights over short distances.
- Climb stairs, ladders, or onto conveyors occasionally to frequently.
- Stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and whipping/shaking motions as described.
Non-Material Handling Demands
- Work 40 hours weekly, with possible overtime and weekends.
- Be alert to safety issues, with visual and auditory awareness.
- Work in various weather conditions and exposure to fumes, dust, and chemicals.
- Wear all required PPE: steel-toe shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.
Tools and Machines
Tools: Pencil, tape measure, markers, chainsaw, cables, pry-bar, ladders, remote control, band cutters, wire cutters, bolt cutters.
Machines: Overhead crane, jib crane, transfers, forklifts.
Experience and Education
- Minimum six months of experience in a steel manufacturing environment preferred.
