This is a steel material handler position responsible for properly reading and executing work orders to meet customer requirements in a timely manner. The position is nonexempt (hourly) and reports directly to the Warehouse Supervisor or Manager, with no supervisory responsibilities. The role requires adherence to Triple-S Steel's job requirements and Safe Methods of Work. Overtime may be necessary to meet customer demands.
Responsibilities
- Follow safety protocols at all times and report unsafe conditions.
- Safely move steel to and from storage, production areas, loading docks, and delivery vehicles using hand tools, forklift, overhead crane, or other equipment.
- Attach slings, hooks, or devices to lift materials and guide loads; climb onto vehicles to secure or release loads.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds for up to 25 feet, and exert force as needed to handle objects, reach, squat, and walk up to 5 miles daily, wearing personal protective equipment.
- Apply proper bundling techniques and configure loads based on planned routes.
- Maximize trailer load capacity safely.
- Maintain and operate tools and equipment safely, including tape measures, calipers, hammers, pallet trucks, banding machines, micrometers, beam hooks, plate lifting clamps, forklifts, and overhead cranes.
- Identify safety issues with equipment and report them promptly.
- Work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Maintain spatial awareness to navigate the work environment safely.
- Attend all required company meetings and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to read work orders or follow oral instructions to determine work assignments and material needs.
- Meet or exceed productivity standards safely.
- Plan and organize work independently and collaboratively.
- Develop knowledge of product and inventory control.
- Maintain communication with other departments regarding routing, safety, and customer relations.
- Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Customer relations skills may be required.
