Job summary

Crowley seeks a senior Marine Engineer/Engineering Services leader to head the Marine Engineering team, guiding mechanical and electrical systems design, project management, and technical oversight across vessel design, construction, and modification projects.

You will establish standards, review complex plans, and coordinate with clients, regulators, and classification societies to ensure compliant, safe, and innovative engineering solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Washington licensure preferred by comity.
  • 10+ years in marine engineering or naval architecture with US-flagged vessels experience.
  • 3+ years in a supervisory role with leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong knowledge of ABS, USCG, DNV, ASME and NFPA codes and standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Marine Engineering team and oversee performance management, hiring, onboarding, and resource planning.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, procedures, tools, and best practices for compliant project execution.
  • Provide technical leadership for marine engineering projects, including design reviews and deliverables.
  • Review plans, drawings, specifications, calculations, schedules, estimates, and technical documentation for accuracy and constructability.
  • Manage multidisciplinary projects across scope, schedule, budget, resources, and stakeholder communications.
  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, regulatory bodies, flag authorities, and classification societies to support approvals and objectives.
  • Support proposals with technical input and scope guidance for marine engineering work.
  • Lead or contribute to feasibility studies and operational evaluations for safe, effective engineering solutions.
  • Promote safety, quality, and compliance with health, safety, environmental and regulatory standards.

What You'll Do

Responsible for leading the Crowley Engineering Services Marine Engineering team, overseeing engineering and design development for mechanical and electrical systems, and delivering project management and technical expertise across a diverse marine vessel design, construction, and modification projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, coach, and develop the Marine Engineering team, including supporting performance management, hiring, onboarding, talent development, and resource planning.
  • Establish and maintain engineering standards, procedures, tools, and best practices to promote consistent, high-quality, and compliant project execution.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance for marine engineering projects, including design reviews, engineering deliverables, and project recommendations.
  • Review plans, drawings, specifications, calculations, schedules, estimates, and technical documentation for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance.
  • Manage multidisciplinary projects by overseeing scope, schedule, budget, resources, stakeholder communication, and successful project delivery.
  • Partner with internal teams, clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, flag authorities, and classification societies to support project approvals, issue resolution, and business objectives.
  • Support proposal and business development efforts by providing technical input, scope guidance, and subject matter expertise for marine engineering work.
  • Lead or contribute to technical studies, feasibility assessments, and operational evaluations that support safe, effective, and practical engineering solutions.
  • Promote a strong safety, quality, and compliance culture by ensuring work aligns with applicable health, safety, environmental, regulatory, licensing, ethical, and company standards.
  • Exercise licensed professional engineering judgment, including reviewing and approving qualified engineering documents as required.
Education & Credentials

Bachelor's degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, mechanical engineering or related field.

Experience
  • 10+ years’ experience in engineering professional services as a marine engineer, naval architect, electrical engineer, or mechanical engineer, with a focus on US-flagged marine vessels systems.
  • 3+ years working in a supervisory capacity. Demonstrated experience with marine mechanical system design and review.
  • Prior experience providing PE stamping and engineering oversight on complex projects.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., ABS, USCG, DNV, ASME, NFPA).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document engineering decisions.
Technical Skills

Proficient in following software environments:

  • Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook
  • AutoCAD
Other

Professional Engineer (PE) license in mechanical engineering or naval architecture and marine engineering required. Licensure through Washington preferred, by comity acceptable. Proficiency with Rhino, PIPE-FLO, and ShipConstructor preferred.

Ability to interpret architectural/engineering drawings, specifications, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. Ability to effectively manage projects that may vary in nature and scope. Knowledge of and ability to utilize design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. Knowledge of principles, practices and concepts of project management. Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and procedures as they pertain to environmental health standards.

Working Conditions

Works both inside an office environment and also outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom and be able to climb ladders. May require extended use of computer keyboard and viewing of computer monitor and ability to sit for long periods of time.
