Job summary

Volusia Sheriff's Office in DeLand, FL seeks an experienced vehicle and marine equipment mechanic to maintain and repair a diverse fleet, including patrol vessels. The role requires skilled mechanical work, welding, diagnostics, and detailed recordkeeping.

Qualifications

• Valid Florida driver’s license and ability to pass required tests.

Responsibilities

• Perform semi-skilled to skilled mechanical repairs on engines, brakes, steering, electrical systems and more.
• Maintain and repair outboard engines for VSO vessels and marine equipment.
• Document work, inspections and safety compliance with accurate records.
• Operate and weld using appropriate welding equipment on various metals.
• Manage inventory, service manuals and parts lists; ensure cleanliness of the facility.
• Conduct routine vessel checks prior to patrol and ensure proper tool usage.

Facilitate and maintain vehicle readiness through coordinating and analyzing various engine repairs, trailer maintenance and maintenance of marine units. Diagnose and determine proper courses of action, transport vehicles and ensure they remain in working order.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
• Two (2) years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair, service and/or maintenance.
• A comparable amount of education and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.
• May be required to successfully complete and pass required skills testing.

Selection Process: The selection process will include a review of each qualified applicant’s education and experience and a formal interview in accordance with VSO policies and procedures.

Background Screening: This position will require an extensive background investigation and drug screening.

Essential Functions:

• Performs semi-skilled to skilled major mechanical repairs and adjustments on most equipment, including work on engines, drive lines, brakes, steering, electrical, cooling systems, suspension, and equipment components.
• Maintains and repairs outboard engines for VSO vessels.
• Maintains and repairs miscellaneous marine equipment and related engines.
• Prepares, inventories and records marine parts and components to prevent corrosion, failure and misuse.
• Conducts periodic routine inspections to ensure safety and proper working conditions of marine equipment.
• Must be able to weld and operate a welder, including welding on various metals (e.g. steel, aluminum, stainless steel)
• Maintains detailed records concerning all work conducted, inspections performed, conditions found and safety compliance.
• Maintains departmental records and updates related to inventory, service manuals, accounts receivable/payable, vendors/parts lists and any other department-related documentation.
• Maintains and files reports, records and/or statements relating to unit functions, as required by established Marine Unit standards.
• Conducts routine maintenance and vessel checks prior to use for patrol.
• Maintains repair facility to a high degree of cleanliness and organization.
• Ensures proper use, maintenance, care and accounting of materials, tools and equipment.
• Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
• Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and local ordinances.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Inside and outside work.
• Ability to tolerate wind, heat, humidity, cold, rain, dust, fumes and odors.
• May involve exposure to confined spaces, chemicals and biting insects.

• Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
• Must be able to remain available to work when a public emergency or disaster occurs.

• Ability to perform advanced level diagnostic procedures.
• Ability to troubleshoot, maintain and repair various types of vehicles and equipment.
• Ability to operate motorized equipment.
• Ability to plan, organize and oversee the work of others.
• Ability to document activities and maintain related records and logs.
• Ability and willingness to work in a subtropical climate under adverse weather conditions and high noise levels.
• Ability to interact effectively with others.

Required Knowledge:

• VSO General Orders and procedures.
• Knowledge of the materials, tools and methods used in the repair, maintenance and servicing of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Knowledge of the functions, services, procedures and regulations of the assigned department.

Physical Requirements:

• Stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to bend, crouch, reach, see, hear, smell, pull, push, stand, kneel, handle, stoop, balance, talk, feel; finger dexterity
• Hearing and visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.
• Occasionally lift up to fifty pounds (50lbs).
