Job summary

County of Volusia is seeking a Trades Worker - Working Title: Weld Shop Technician for the Road and Bridge Division. The position located in DeLand, Florida, requires performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks including maintenance and repair of machinery, welding, fabrication, concrete repairs, and pipe work.

CDL Class A is required; two years of related experience and a high school diploma or GED are necessary.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience in building maintenance, plumbing repair, carpentry, electrical, concrete, small engine repair, or mechanical pipe installation and repair.

Responsibilities

• Performs or assists with fabrication and welding tasks.
• Performs small engine repairs and operates power and hydraulic hand tools.
• May install and repair underground drainage piping, structures, and restoration.
• May perform concrete work (sidewalks, driveways, free form, etc.).
• May do grade shots for pipe and structure installation.
• Operates vehicles and equipment, including tractors, front loaders, mini excavators, skid loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, and trailers.
• May load/unload trailer equipment and materials.
• Performs routine service and maintenance of equipment.
• May perform minor plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and electrical repairs.
• Works independently with limited supervision.

The County of Volusia is seeking a Trades Worker - Working Title: Weld Shop Technician for the Road and Bridge Division. This position is located DeLand, Florida, and will be responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks, including the maintenance and repair of machinery and small engines, welding, fabrication, concrete repairs, and pipe work. This position is also responsible for operating hand and power tools, vehicles, and machinery. It requires the ability to perform tasks with little supervision.

• Performs or assists with fabrication and welding tasks.
• Performs small engine repairs and operates power and hydraulic hand tools.
• May install and repair underground drainage piping, structures, and restoration.
• May perform concrete work (sidewalks, driveways, free form, etc.).
• May do grade shots for pipe and structure installation.
• Operates vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to tractors, front loaders, mini excavators, skid loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, pick-up trucks, and a variety of trailers from utility trailers to lowboy semi-trailers.
• May load and unload trailer equipment and materials.
• Performs routine service and maintenance of equipment.
• May perform minor plumbing work, general carpentry work, general masonry work, and minor electrical repairs.
• Works independently with limited supervision.
• May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
• Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
• Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
• Responds to emergency situations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of one or more of the building trades.

High School diploma or possession of GED and two (2) years of experience in building maintenance, plumbing repair, carpentry, electrical, concrete, small engine repair, or mechanical pipe installation and repair.

Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) – Class A at the time of hire.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License – Class A within thirty (30) days of hire.

A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum experience.

Physical Demands

Medium to heavy work. Ability to see (depth perception, color, acuity), hear, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach overhead, climb, grasp, lift, carry, pull, push up to 100 pounds. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) is necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.

Mental Demands

Ability to read and comprehend work orders, safety and operational instructions, procedures, memos. Ability to perform shop math. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data and details to others.

Environmental Demands

Inside and outside work. May require exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), chemicals, dust, confined spaces and poor ventilation.
