THOR Solutions Job Description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated journeyman-level Marine Mechanical Engineer with experience in ship propulsion to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)'s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide technical support and documentation to design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, including power supply and propulsion systems.
  2. Research and develop ship propulsion systems, such as diesels, gas turbines, diesel-electric systems, propellers, rudders, thrusters, gears, shafts, bearings, seals, noise, vibration, and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems, applying them to design requirements.
  3. Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  4. Conduct analyses of propulsion systems and types, lead the development of technical data packages, and review them.
  5. Conduct trade studies on ship configuration options.
Additional Details

Location: Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Alternative telework arrangements may be considered for especially qualified candidates.

Travel: Up to 10% for ship checks.

Physical Activity: Mainly desk/computer work; may include visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, traversing shipboard spaces.

Pay Range: $80,000 - 112,000, based on experience and qualifications.

Citizenship & Security Clearance: U.S. citizenship is required. Candidates should have or be eligible for a DoD Secret security clearance.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited institution; Master's preferred.
  • Minimum three years of relevant experience in ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, and trade studies.
  • Experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs preferred.
  • Familiarity with ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design standards.
  • Proficiency with productivity software and strong communication skills.
