THOR Solutions

is actively seeking a highly motivated journeyman-level Marine Mechanical Engineer with experience in ship propulsion to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Baltimore, MD. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support and documentation to design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, including power supply and propulsion systems.
  • Research and develop ship propulsion systems, such as diesels, gas turbines, diesel-electric systems, propellers, rudders, thrusters, gears, shafts, bearings, seals, noise, vibration, and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems, applying to design and requirements.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  • Conduct analyses of propulsion systems and types, lead development of technical data packages, and perform reviews.
  • Conduct trade studies regarding ship configuration.
Location:

Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) in Baltimore, MD. Alternate telework schedules or work locations may be considered for especially qualified candidates.

Travel:

Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.

Physical Activity:

Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve repetitive motion and periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, including traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches).

Pay Range:

The anticipated pay range is $80,000 – 112,000, based on education, qualifications, and experience.

Citizenship & Security Clearance:

U.S. citizenship is required. A DoD Secret security clearance is required, either already possessed or eligible upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited institution. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and trade studies, with experience in U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs.
  • Familiarity with ABS, NVR, and commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficiency with productivity software.
  • Strong communication skills.
