Marine Mechanical Engineer (Propulsion), Journeyman

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated journeyman-level Marine Mechanical Engineer with experience in ship propulsion to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with developing ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, weight assessments, and/or conducting trade studies on the configuration of propulsion and associated components, as well as familiarity with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs, standards, and regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support and documentation design, develop, and evaluate the operation of marine vessels, ship machinery, and related equipment, including power supply and propulsion systems.
  • Research and develop ship propulsion systems, including diesels, gas turbines, diesel-electric systems, propellers, rudders, thrusters, gears, shafts, bearings, seals, noise, vibration, and interfaces with dynamic positioning systems, applying them to design requirements.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications.
  • Conduct analyses of propulsion systems and types, lead development of technical data packages and reviews.
  • Conduct trade studies regarding ship configuration.
Location & Travel

Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Alternative telework arrangements may be considered for especially qualified candidates. Up to 10% travel may be required for ship checks.

Physical Activity & Work Environment

Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve visits to waterfront/shipboard environments, including traversing shipboard spaces like confined areas, ladders, and hatches.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay range: $80,000 – 112,000, based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include paid time off, holidays, 401(k), health insurance options, flexible spending accounts, life and disability insurance, pet benefits, legal resources, and more.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited institution; Master’s preferred.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant experience in ship propulsion and control systems, machinery arrangements, and trade studies.
  • Experience with U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding programs preferred.
  • Familiarity with ABS, NVR, and related regulations.
  • Proficiency with productivity software and strong communication skills.
Additional Information

US citizenship and a DoD Secret security clearance are required. Candidates must be eligible for clearance or already possess one.
