Job summary

New York City Department of Transportation seeks a Marine Engineer to operate the main propulsion and auxiliaries on NYC ferries from the Staten Island site. You will ensure compliance with federal, state, and agency SOPs and maintain machinery records.

The role requires an active USCG Third Assistant Marine Engineer license or higher, MMC with medical certificate, TWIC, Coast Guard medical guidelines, and drug screening. Residency not required; 40 hours with nights/weekends; salary scale shown.

Qualifications

• Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with endorsement and medical certificate required.
• Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) required.
• Coast Guard medical guidelines apply; drug screening/medical exam required.
• Valid Third Assistant Marine Engineer of Motor Vessels license or higher (USCG).
• Residency not required for NYC position.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Chief Marine Engineer in supervising the engine room crew.
• Maintain, perform minor/emergency repairs, and operate main propulsion and auxiliaries.
• Follow start-up/shut-down, watch standing, and fueling procedures.
• Conduct rounds and inspections of machinery spaces.
• Keep operation and inspection records and logs up to date.
• Supervise vessel fueling and proper fuel storage on board.
• Prepare reports and participate in ferry safety meetings.
• May perform duties of a superior during temporary absence.
