Job Summary

This position will work in the manufacturing spaces and provide direct instruction to undergraduate and graduate students in the use of appropriate equipment and tooling to make parts for curricular needs. The role helps students utilize drawings and solid models of parts and translate these drawings into real parts using appropriate equipment in the manufacturing spaces. The position also ensures safety is maintained within the manufacturing mall complex and assists with proper training procedures for teaching assistants and student employees. Additionally, the role serves as an instructional lab supervisor, providing direct support to faculty, staff, and students.

This position provides strategic guidance in the development of new manufacturing procedures and processes to modernize the school's undergraduate program. It leads the design efforts to implement new concepts in labs or projects, engages collaborators and resources, and guides proposals through design review, fabrication, and implementation processes.

Responsibilities

Serve as the first point of contact for users in one or more of the manufacturing spaces and provide direct instruction to student users on the safe usage of all tools available.
Serve as a subject matter consultant for formal M.E. lab classes, training and assisting Teaching Assistants and working with faculty on designing effective lab activities.
Review student drawing packages and models, advising on optimal methods, materials, and manufacturing processes.
Always ensure a safe working environment, fostering a culture of safety and learning.
Design and develop shop safety policies and procedures, conduct post-incident reviews, and propose solutions to improve safety and equipment availability.
Implement the Hazard Communication and Safety program, ensuring all required OSHA documentation and training is complete and up to date.
Hire and train student staff to monitor and manage the facility.
Provide supervisory support to other School making facilities, covering absences in the manual project machine shop, CNC machine shop, welding studio, or wood innovation studio.
Maintain tool inventory and coordinate ordering of tooling and supplies each semester.
Design, develop, and maintain outreach training materials to better prepare students and evaluate their knowledge.
Complete continuing education activities to improve knowledge of materials and processes and how to teach safe making methods.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in STEM or Education; four (4) years of experience; background in teaching or working in a teaching shop environment preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Skills needed: Manual machine tools, CAD software fundamentals (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar), CNC knowledge desired, moderate physical activity, exposure to fumes/vapors, dust, odors, heavy machinery, lasers, and sharp objects.
