Job summary

Whippany Actuation Systems seeks a Manufacturing Engineer (Machine Shop) for its 2nd shift to develop and optimize CNC machining processes for aerospace-grade components. You will program milling and turning operations, select tooling and fixturing, and ensure manufacturability in cross‑functional teams with design, quality and production.

Ideal candidates have a BS in engineering, 3 years in high-tech manufacturing, and CNC/CAD proficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 3 years of engineering experience in a high-technology manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with precision machining and CNC programming.
  • US work authorization.

Responsibilities

Manufacturing Engineer

Whippany Actuation Systems is a dynamic aerospace company that designs and manufactures electromechanical actuators and control electronics for commercial and military applications. We are looking for an aggressively forward-thinking and passionate Manufacturing Engineer to join a team dedicated and committed to implementing world-class manufacturing methods and processes, including collaborative robotics, unattended machining, and custom design solutions. The Manufacturing Engineer (Machine Shop- 2nd Shift) will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and supporting machining processes for actuation system components. This role focuses on CNC machining processes which encompasses programming, tooling, fixturing, and continuous improvement for high precision parts made from aerospace-grade alloys. They will have to work cross-functionally with design, quality, and production teams to ensure efficient manufacturing methods that meet customer and regulatory requirements.

In this role, you will typically:
  • Develop, validate, and optimize CNC machining processes for new and existing components.
  • Program CNC machines for both milling and turning operations, ensuring efficient and accurate machining.
  • Select appropriate tooling, cutting parameters, and work holding to maximize quality and efficiency.
  • Create and revise CNC programs and set up documentation.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to ensure parts are manufacturable.
  • Analyze cost drivers within product and process designs for the purpose of eliminating waste, continuous improvement, and productivity initiatives.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and 3D models to ensure process plans to meet design intent and functional requirements.
  • Create sketches or diagrams to supplement documentation and communicate machining methods and setups.
  • Support capital equipment selection and justification for machining technologies.
  • Support machinists during production by troubleshooting technical issues and addressing process variability.
  • Team with quality engineering and production to determine root cause of non-conformances providing for robust and sustainable corrective plans.
  • Actively participates in EHS activities such as area inspections, safety assessments, team meetings, accident investigations and procedure development.
  • Brings unsafe conditions to management's attention or corrects as able.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.
We require:
  • A bachelor's degree in manufacturing, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • 3 years' engineering experience working in a high technology manufacturing environment.
  • Previous experience and/or knowledgeable with precision machining and CNC programming.
  • Authorization to work in the US.
Eligibility Requirements:

This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. Whippany Actuation Systems will require proof of status before employment.

We would really like to see:
  • Familiarity with ERP and MES systems used in manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency with CREO, Auto CAD, SolidWorks, etc. (CAD software).
  • Experience with Windchill (PLM software).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Prior experience and/or certification with Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma.
  • Bias for action. Ability to spontaneously recognize problems and opportunities. Ability to drive problem resolution and flow through to completions.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify root causes and provide corrective solutions.
  • Ability to handle diverse activities simultaneously.
  • Creative problem solver who makes solid decisions driven by metrics.
  • Willing to own the process/problem through to completion.
  • Able to work in a team environment to achieve the desired results.
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Fully proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Intermediate Excel.
  • Prior Supervisor experience is a plus but not required
Compensation and Benefits:

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $90,000 to $110,000 per year. Final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. If hired, the employee will be in an "at-will position."
