General Purpose

The Manual Machinist will safely operate various machining tools such as lathes, mills, presses, grinders, saws, drills, and boring tools to repair existing or create replacement parts for mechanical assemblies or to fabricate new parts from drawings and/or specifications. Uses measuring devices such as micrometers and calipers with proper techniques to determine correct sizing. Records all data necessary to produce expected service and/or design results.

Essential Functions

1. Accurately operate various machining equipment including horizontal lathes, milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders/sanders, hydraulic presses, chop saws, and band saws.
2. Read blueprints and/or draft drawings specifications.
3. Use measuring devices such as outside micrometers, calipers, inside micrometers, bore gauges, feeler gauges, and rules to read and record sizes of equipment and component parts.
4. Calculate tolerances and fits based on measurements made.
5. Document all measurements on applicable forms.
6. Perform machining tasks such as turning shafts or bulk stock, milling keyways, turning and cutting threads, using hydraulic presses to remove items from housings, drilling, grinding, and sanding.

Qualifications

• 1 to 3 years of experience in a related machine shop environment or successful completion of an accredited EASA, military, or trade school machine shop program.
• Proficiency in blueprint reading, machining, measurement, data collection, and safety at a skilled tradesman level.

Skills

• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Effective oral and written communication skills with co-workers, shop staff, supervisors, and managers.

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
