Lee & Hayes, P.C. in Seattle, WA seeks a Mandarin-speaking Patent Attorney to join its national IP practice. The role involves drafting and prosecuting patent applications in computer-related tech, coordinating with foreign offices and bilingual colleagues, and advising clients on patent strategy in both English and Mandarin.

The ideal candidate has a JD, a BS in CS or EE, 3 years IP experience, USPTO admission, and fluent Mandarin. Competitive compensation and extensive benefits are provided.

• Juris Doctor degree and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
• Licensed to practice law.
• 3 years of experience as an IP attorney.
• Bar admission in a state.
• Licensed to practice before the USPTO (limited recognition acceptable).
• Fluent in Mandarin Chinese (traditional and simplified).

Responsibilities

• Prepare and prosecute patent applications in computer-related technologies including software, ML, AI, AR/VR.
• File and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO and foreign offices, respond to official actions, draft briefs, interview Examiners.
• Oversee filing and prosecution of patent applications in multiple foreign jurisdictions including China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
• Direct foreign associates in English and Chinese on foreign patent matters.
• Conduct invention disclosure meetings in Chinese and English to develop understanding for drafting patent applications.
• Translate patent docs between Chinese and English as required.
• Perform prior art searches for patentability and validity.
• Advise and represent clients before government agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prepare and prosecute patent applications in the computer-related technology fields including software applications, machine learning, artificial intelligence, augmented or virtual reality;
• File and prosecute patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and foreign patent/trademark offices including responding to official government actions, drafting appeal briefs, conducting telephone and in-person interviews with Patent Examiners;
• Oversee filing and prosecution of patent applications in multiple foreign jurisdictions including China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan;
• Direct foreign associates in English and Chinese regarding the handling of foreign patent applications;
• Conduct invention disclosure meetings with inventors in both Chinese and English to develop a thorough understanding of advanced technologies in preparation to draft patent applications;
• Review and evaluate complex invention disclosures and documents, company brochures, technical information and drawings, engineering specifications, and other technical data in both Chinese and English;
• Translate patent applications, including technical language and specifications, from Chinese to English and English to Chinese, as required for U.S. and foreign patent matters;
• Perform prior art search for claim patentability and validity;
• Advise and represent clients in in private matters and before government agencies;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Juris Doctor degree and Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering;

Licensed to practice law;

3 years of experience as an IP attorney;

Membership in a state bar association;

Licensed and in good standing to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (limited recognition acceptable);

Fluent in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese (traditional and simplified);

Interpret laws, rulings, and regulations for individuals and businesses in patent-related work;

Knowledge of complex computer and electrical technologies including programming languages, database technologies, computer architectures, image and video processing, electrical metering and smart grid technologies, quantum computing, and bioinformatics

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The annualized salary range for this position in Washington is $140,000 to $225,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on the candidate’s education, training, experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. Our compensation program also provides annual incentive bonuses based on work production and may also offer merit bonuses.
