Job description

The Managing Director of Resource Development & Communications is a senior leadership role responsible for raising capital for New Jersey Community Capital by building and managing relationships with foundations, individual donors, government agencies, banks, Donor Advised Funds, businesses, impact investors, and corporate partners. This is a relationship-driven, revenue-generating role. The Managing Director is expected to maintain an active calendar of funder and prospect meetings, bring an existing network of contacts into the position, and independently move relationships from introduction to solicitation to renewal with minimal day-to-day direction.

As a member of NJCC’s senior leadership team, the Managing Director sets the organization’s fundraising and capitalization strategy, leads the development of a multi-year capitalization plan in partnership with the CEO, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Operating Officer, and is accountable for annual revenue goals. The Managing Director also oversees NJCC’s government affairs and communications and marketing function, working with a communications associate and NJCC’s outside communications/PR consultant to manage NJCC’s public voice and submit grant applications, as needed. The Managing Director partners with program, real estate, and lending teams to track and report the organization’s impact numbers to funders and the public, and works closely with senior leadership and the Board.

Job Type: Full-time

Responsibilities

Resource Development & Fundraising

  • Lead NJCC’s fundraising and capitalization efforts, setting annual revenue goals, plans, and strategies and developing a multi-year capitalization plan with senior leadership.

  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a personal portfolio of major relationships with foundations, individual donors, government agencies, banks, Donor Advised Funds, businesses, impact investors, and corporate partners to meet annual fundraising and capitalization goals.

  • Proactively schedule and lead a regular cadence of in-person and virtual meetings with current and prospective funders; build and maintain a pipeline of prospects, drawing on an existing network of professional contacts.

  • Identify, research, and pursue new capital, grant, sponsorship, and program related investment (PRI) opportunities aligned with NJCC’s lending, real estate, and community development programs, including debt and equity capital for lending and the design of new capital strategies and products, with assistance of the team.

  • Develop, manage, supervise, and support grant proposals, letters of inquiry, sponsorship packages, responses to requests for proposals, and funder communications, incorporating impact data and organizational storytelling.

  • Manage, supervise, and track grant and funding applications and funder/investor fulfillment requirements to ensure timely, complete submittals; follow up as needed to close gifts, grants, and investments.

  • Coordinate and manage donor and funder campaigns, stewardship events, and major solicitations; serve as the lead contact for sponsors and ensure sponsor satisfaction.

  • Leverage the CEO’s and Board’s relationships to open doors with high-priority funders and investors.

  • Represent NJCC at industry conferences, funder convenings, and community events to expand its network of capital sources.

Communications, Marketing & Government Affairs

  • Oversee NJCC’s communications and marketing strategy, including brand positioning, key messaging, and organizational storytelling.

  • Oversee NJCC’s government affairs activities in coordination with the CEO and senior leadership.

  • Manage NJCC’s relationship with its retained communications/PR firm, including setting priorities, reviewing deliverables, and managing scope and budget.

  • Oversee media relations, press releases, social media posts, and public statements; act as a point of contact for press inquiries in coordination with leadership.

  • Direct and manage content strategy across NJCC’s website, social media, newsletters, and annual reports.

Impact Reporting & Donor Systems

  • Partner with program, lending, real estate, strategic investments, and community development teams to track and maintain NJCC’s impact numbers, ensuring data is accurate and current.

  • Translate impact data into compelling narratives and materials for funders, investors, media, and other stakeholders.

  • Lead funder and investor reporting and ensure timely submission of impact-related sections of grant and funder reports.

  • Oversee development-related use of NJCC’s CRM system (Salesforce) and funder grant portals so that relationships, pipeline, and reporting are tracked consistently.

Team & Vendor Management

  • Provide executive leadership to the resource development and communications team, including the Communications Associate, through goal setting, performance management, and professional development.

  • Build and institutionalize development policies, procedures, and systems as the team grows.

  • Manage the scope, budget, and performance of the outside communications/PR firm and other external communications vendors.

  • Coordinate with other departments and senior managers across NJCC to align fundraising and communications efforts with organizational priorities.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional experience in resource development, fundraising, or business development, including 5+ years of direct management experience; prior experience in banking, financial services, or investment management with a transition into a foundation, nonprofit, or CDFI setting strongly preferred.

  • An established, active network of relationships with foundations, government funders, banks, impact investors, and corporate/business contacts that can be brought into the role, along with a proven track record of securing significant gifts, grants, and capital.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage a fundraising pipeline with minimal supervision, including scheduling meetings, cultivating prospects, and closing gifts, grants, or investments.

  • Demonstrated grant management experience across different funding types, including federal, corporate, and philanthropic.

  • Self-motivated, entrepreneurial, and comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy; a track record of taking initiative rather than waiting for direction.

  • Strategic leader able to analyze results and provide practical recommendations to the CEO and senior leadership, and to help build NJCC’s next chapter of fundraising growth.

  • CDFI industry experience and/or familiarity with lending, real estate, or community development finance and policy issues a plus.

  • Experience overseeing a communications or marketing function, including managing outside PR/communications vendors, preferred.

  • Experience managing staff and external vendors/contractors.

  • Experience with relationship management and CRM software (Salesforce preferred).

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial and impact information into compelling materials for funders and the public.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills; able to sustain a demanding external meeting schedule alongside internal deliverables and deadlines.

  • Collaborative, transparent leadership style and the ability to work as part of a dynamic and diverse team.
