Job summary

Old Dominion Freight Line, in Thomasville, NC, seeks a seasoned Purchasing Manager to direct procurement operations, overseeing SAP S/4HANA and Ariba to ensure compliant, efficient purchasing and risk oversight.

You will lead supplier relationships, onboarding, risk assessments, and policy development while coordinating with Legal, IT Security, Risk, and Finance to strengthen internal controls and SOX compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in risk management, supply chain, business administration or related field.
  • 10 years of experience in Vendor / Supplier Management, Procurement, Risk Management, Compliance, or related functions.
  • Thorough understanding of SAP S4/Hana and Ariba purchasing systems.
  • Experience in transportation, logistics, or similar complex environments preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day purchasing; lead supplier relationships and contract negotiations for physical goods.
  • Oversee supplier onboarding, risk vetting, performance reporting, and offboarding.
  • Act as the primary business lead for SAP S/4HANA, Ariba, and Supplier Lifecycle Management.
  • Help lead software upgrades by defining requirements and coordinating with IT.
  • Create and update purchasing and supplier policies to strengthen internal controls.
  • Manage vendor documentation and approvals across Legal, IT Security, Risk, and Finance.

The Purchasing Manager directs ODFL’s procurement operations, overseeing SAP S/4HANA and Ariba, to ensure compliant, efficient procurement and risk oversight.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day purchasing to ensure all tasks are completed accurately and on time; lead strategic supplier relationships and contract negotiations for physical goods.
  • Oversee the entire supplier process including onboarding, risk vetting, performance reporting, and offboarding while coaching internal teams on best practices.
  • Act as the primary business lead for SAP S/4HANA, Ariba, and Supplier Lifecycle Management to ensure systems align with procurement policies and SOX audit requirements.
  • Help lead software upgrades by defining requirements, partnering with IT, and managing the final rollout and team adoption.
  • Create and update purchasing and supplier management policies to improve clarity and strengthen internal controls.
  • Manage vendor documentation and approvals across internal departments, including Legal, IT Security, Risk, and Finance.
Job Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in risk management, Supply Chain, Business Administration or related field required (or equivalent experience).
Required Experience
  • 10 years of experience in Vendor / Supplier Management, Procurement, Risk Management, Compliance, or related functions.
  • Thorough understanding of SAP S4/Hana and Ariba purchasing systems.
  • Hands-on experience managing supplier onboarding, risk assessments, and ongoing monitoring programs.
  • Experience within transportation, logistics, or similarly complex operational environments preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
