Job summary

Vanderweil Engineers is seeking a Manager of Structural Engineering to lead the design of transmission and distribution substations from our Boston headquarters (Seaport District) with optional NYC or Philadelphia offices on a hybrid schedule.

The role emphasizes mentoring junior staff, overseeing construction documents, and ensuring code compliance, with a focus on reliability and innovation across the Power Group.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of structural engineering experience.
• 5+ years in substation structural design for transmission and/or distribution facilities.
• PE license is required.
• Proficient with structural software listed in tools.

Responsibilities

• Lead the structural engineering and design of both transmission and distribution substations, including new builds, expansions, and retrofits.
• Develop and oversee production of structural construction documents, including detailed specifications, plans, and calculations for steel, concrete, and foundation systems.
• Evaluate existing structures for loading capacity, retrofit needs, and compliance with current codes.
• Coordinate with geotechnical teams for foundation design.
• Support and lead field investigations, constructability reviews, and site assessments.
• Review and approve delegated design work from subconsultants or junior engineers, ensuring compliance with engineering best practices and project requirements.
• Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers, designers, and drafters.

• Evaluate existing structures for loading capacity, retrofit needs, and compliance with current codes.
• Coordinate with geotechnical teams for interpretation and application of soil data into foundation design.
• Support and lead field investigations, constructability reviews, and site assessments.

Requirements:

• 15+ years of structural engineering experience,
• 5+ years in substation structural design for transmission and/or distribution facilities.
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
• PE license required
• Designing and analyzing steel structures, equipment foundations, site civil systems for substations.
• Proficient with structural software like STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, RAM Structural System, L-Pile, CSI SAFE, MFAD, or MathCAD.

Flexible & Hybrid Culture:

Compensation range is $175,000 to $200,000 plus yearly merit bonus depending on years of experience, licensure, skill sets and education.
