Definition

To perform professional, analytic, and administrative duties that require knowledge of administrative principles and analytical practices; to assist a department head, City executive, or supervisor by providing administrative and technical support in the planning, direction and operation of the department; and to provide professional level support to an assigned supervisor. Management Analysts are part of a program that may be assigned to departments on a rotational basis

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the journey-level class in the professional Management Analyst series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, independence of action taken, complexity of duties assigned and amount of time spent performing these duties, and by the nature of the public contact made. Incumbents perform analytical work requiring knowledge of administrative principles and analytical practices. Management Analysts assist higher level professional or supervisory/management staff members in various management tasks and projects covering a range of issues. Assignments are made under general supervision, allowing the incumbent latitude in managing and completing ongoing projects/assignments. Work review is occasional during progress and upon completion. Normally, the employee is responsible for handling routine work problems and the satisfactory achievement of specified objectives.

This class is distinguished from the Senior Management Analyst in that the latter performs the most difficult and complex analytical work on assignments having greater impact on departmental operations or City-wide programs; is responsible for the management and administration of a significant program, function, or service area; and may supervise professional and support staff.
