Job description

The City of Berkeley is currently accepting applications for Assistant Management Analyst. In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform research and analysis that supports the development and implementation of policies, programs, and/or budgets. Duties may include gathering data for compliance reports, assisting with grant applications, and monitoring departmental expenditures.

This is a city-wide classification with positions in multiple departments and divisions including Planning; Finance; Human Resources; City Manager's Office; Rent Board; Parks, Recreation, & Waterfront; Public Works; Police; and Health, Housing & Community Services. The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill any vacant positions within one year.

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with major coursework in business or public administration or a closely related field. Responsible office or program administrative or similar sub-professional work may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Special Status: Positions in the City Manager's office are exempt from the regular career service and the incumbent will hold regular "at will" status.

Other requirements: Specified positions may require possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

The exam process will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents
  • Review of Supplemental Questionnaire
  • Written Exam (tentatively scheduled for the last week of September 2026)

Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
