LanguageLine is hiring a Maltese-English telephone interpreter to work from home.

Job Title: Maltese Interpreter
Location: Work at Home (United States)
Status: Independent Contractor
Pay: $1.25 - $1.40 per minute.

Position Overview

The Maltese Telephone Interpreter handles calls on demand, translating conversations between Maltese and English speakers across industries such as healthcare, government, insurance, finance, utilities, travel & hospitality, general business, law enforcement, court, and 911. The interpreter processes information quickly, concisely, and recognizes cultural differences while maintaining professionalism and courtesy throughout all sessions.

Essential Job Functions

• Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
• Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
• Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
• Maintain a professional demeanor at all times, remaining calm during emergency or emotionally charged situations.
• Follow client instructions and protocol to meet client expectations, avoiding unauthorized interaction with the LEP.
• Understand protocol and terminology for various industries including medical, insurance, finance, and law.
• Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity.

Qualifications

• Fluency in Maltese and English, with strong cultural competence and ability to assess regional and accent differences.
• Excellent listening, retention, and note‑taking skills for high‑accuracy interpretation.
• Ability to concentrate, remain detached and objective, and remain on calls involving sensitive topics such as end‑of‑life conversations, pregnancy termination, vaccinations, and matters related to sexual orientation and gender expression.
• Education or work experience in language‑related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation, or interpretation is preferred.
• At least 18 years of age and legally authorized to work in the United States.
• High school diploma or equivalent; ability to read and write the requested languages is highly preferred.
• Ability to adapt to LanguageLine technology enhancements and meet client demands.

Technical Requirements

• Dedicated personal device for business purposes: desktop or laptop running Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS; tablets (iPadOS or Android) and smartphones (iOS or Android) are acceptable.
• No use of restricted brands such as Kaspersky or Huawei hardware.
• High‑speed Internet connection with download ≥ 5Mbps, upload ≥ 3Mbps, ping ≤ 300ms, jitter ≤ 30ms.
• Quiet, secure space free from background noise or distractions.

Physical Requirements

• Operate keyboard and mouse in a stationary position in front of a computer for the majority of the workday.
• Type or write with sufficient manual dexterity; lift up to 26lbs.
• Work may involve exposure to moderate noise levels from computer, audio, or telephone.
