Job summary

Parsons School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks Student Assistants in the E4 Wood, Metal, Tool Checkout, and Light lab within the Making Center. Parsons Making Center is a collection of more than 70,000 sq.

ft. of labs, shops, studios, and open workspaces that provide curricular support for making across a broad range of mediums and disciplines and supports experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

• Excellent communication, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
• Able to follow verbal/written instructions and communicate clearly with users.
• Adaptable and consistent with schedule-change notifications.
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to interact with diverse students, faculty, staff.
• Ability to work independently.
• Familiarity with Google Suite.
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs routinely and up to 50 lbs occasionally.

Responsibilities

• Foster an inclusive, welcoming shop culture for all users.
• Offer high-quality customer service to students, faculty, and staff.
• Punctual shift reporting and review of tasks with supervisor.
• Monitor entry/exit and assist patrons as needed.
• Inform users about services, policies, and procedures.
• Reception duties: greet visitors, answer calls/emails professionally.
• Assist with reservations and equipment requests.
• Assist tool checkout.
• Inspect returned tools for damage or cleanliness.
• Maintain tool organization.
• Assist lighting installations as needed.
• Assist with shop upkeep, opening/closing, sorting deliveries, inventory.
• Support store operations: procure items, prepare materials, inventory, move materials.
• Maintenance and repair of machinery; replace parts; restock consumables; clean equipment.
• Daily upkeep: dust control, PPE restock, reset machines; participate in training.
