Major Gifts Officer

Department: Development

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Remote (US)

Compensation: $120,000 - $140,000 / year


Description
Our team is looking for a strategic, creative and experienced professional to serve as the Major Gifts Officer leading the organization’s major donor strategy. The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a major gifts program. The ideal candidate has a broad knowledge of development, a passion for HMI’s mission, and an entrepreneurial spirit to build a new program. This person will be a self-starting, engaging, collaborative person who isn’t afraid to try new things. They will identify, research, manage and implement solicitation plans for a portfolio of major gifts, primarily individual donors. HMI has a robust institutional giving portfolio and is looking to expand its major gifts program through individual donors. This position reports to HMI’s Director of Development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the primary relationship manager with a portfolio of major donors and prospects ($5,000+); identifying, researching, cultivating and personally soliciting donors
  • Identify, cultivate, steward and build trusted relationships with major donors and prospective major donors to generate new and increased giving
  • Develop personalized engagement plans for each donor in the portfolio
  • Conduct face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and written communications to build and maintain relationships
  • Develop and implement strategies to achieve annual and long-term fundraising goals
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development and other team members to align major gift efforts with overall fundraising plans
  • Prepare proposals, presentations, and other materials to support major gift solicitations, including prospect research to identify high-impact donors within and beyond the current donor pool.
  • Track and report on progress towards fundraising goals utilizing Salesforce
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of donor interactions and gift agreements
  • Work closely with the development team, program team, board members, and HMI’s senior leadership team to leverage relationships and maximize fundraising potential
  • Collaborate with program staff to build alumni advisory councils that spearhead fundraising efforts, organize impactful events, and strengthen alumni networks
  • Assume other responsibilities as needed

Key Qualifications and Position Details
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in a preferably related field (e.g., Nonprofit Management, Business, Communications).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in major gift fundraising
  • Proven track record of securing major gifts ($25,000+) and meeting fundraising goals
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing a fundraising plan
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Salesforce, Google Workplace, and iWave
POSITION DETAILS
  • This position will report directly to the Director of Development
  • This position is remote. Candidates must reside in the US, preferably an HMI Hub City (i.e. Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC)
  • Domestic travel required approximately 40% of the time, including funder trips, staff retreats and regional meetings
