Position Overview

The Senior Major Gifts Officer I (SMGO) develops strategies for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors capable of making a major gift ($100k over three years). The role focuses on expanding Earthjustice’s presence in New York City through networking, outreach, and partnerships. Responsibilities include managing a donor portfolio, conducting exploratory meetings, and achieving a fundraising goal of $2 million annually.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Grow and manage a donor portfolio in NYC through prospecting, networking, and outreach.
  2. Develop and implement strategies for engaging prospects and donors, including cultivation and solicitation plans.
  3. Meet annual fundraising goals of $2 million, including bequest targets, and regularly review progress with supervisors.
  4. Engage Board of Trustees and Earthjustice Council members in fundraising efforts.
  5. Travel for donor visits, events, and trainings.
  6. Collaborate with program leaders and donor relations staff to provide updates and recognition.
  7. Maintain a strong understanding of Earthjustice’s work to effectively communicate its mission to donors.
  8. Assist in creating budgets, collateral, research profiles, and targeted mailing lists.
  9. Support planning and execution of donor events and field trips.
  10. Utilize donor databases for record-keeping, tracking, and planning.
  11. Pursue professional development opportunities.
  12. Promote a culture of philanthropy and foster a respectful, inclusive work environment.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of related fundraising experience.
  2. Proven ability to solicit and close $100k gifts from individuals.
  3. Experience working within NYC’s philanthropic community.
  4. Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
  5. Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, especially major and planned gifts.
  6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and donor database management.
  7. Valid driver’s license.
  8. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  9. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with initiative and flexibility.
  10. Sense of humor and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Salary & Benefits

Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits, including health, dental, vision, retirement, and paid sabbatical after 10 years. Salary ranges:

  • New York, NY: $149,300 – $165,900
  • New Haven, CT: $134,500 – $149,400
