Senior Major Gifts Officer
Position Summary
This newly elevated leadership position oversees all aspects of major gifts within HDSA, fostering a culture of philanthropy across this national organization to realize it’s mission of improving the lives of everyone affected by Huntington’s disease and their families. At HDSA, we are on a mission to support families affected by Huntington’s disease and rid the world of this devastating brain disorder.
Reporting to the Chief Development and Field Officer, the Senior Major Gifts Officer is responsible for managing the Society’s major gifts program, creating and maintaining meaningful and productive relationships with individual donors, and collaborating with HDSA development staff to increase funding through foundations and corporations, appeals, proposals, and national events. As an integral member of the fundraising leadership team, this role will be tasked with the identification and cultivation of new prospects as well as the development of strategies to retain existing donors and steward loyal constituents.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Major Gifts Officer including but are not limited to:
- Lead, coordinate, and manage the Major Gifts initiatives of the Society.
- With the Chief Development and Field Officer, plan and execute successful stewardship and engagement of current and prospects on a national level.
- Works collaboratively and strategically with other Development staff and key volunteers, as appropriate, to coordinate strategic and purposeful cultivation and solicitation activities at the national, regional and local chapter and affiliate level.
- Launch and manage a branded major gifts program aimed to grow a strong pipeline of non-event personal giving, helping to provide moves management of the current robust individual supporter pipeline.
- Author and/or edit funding proposals and materials consistent with HDSA protocols, to facilitate effective gift solicitations.
- Manage, motivate, mentor, train, and review staff associate(s) who are direct reports. Establish realistic but bold strategic work plans for each team member.
- Endeavors to be well-informed of HDSA’s strategic priorities and gift opportunities to best align them with the interests of those donors and prospective donors who have the capacity and inclination to support them.
- Manage a national donor portfolio (approximately 200 contacts) as a frontline fundraiser: Support a moves management structure to bring donors and prospects through the donor cycle and into a position to consider a major gift of $10,000 or more.
- Attend a variety of fundraising special events.
- Enhance donor and fundraising marketing & communication on all levels of the organization. Keep individual donors and the public informed, thanked, and involved, providing vehicles for more effective communication about the impact fundraising results have on our mission work and the families we serve.
- Work closely with the Chief Development and Field Officer to monitor performance around retention, outreach to prospects, and solicitations, and track donor interactions in Donor View.
- Assist the Chief Development and Field Officer in the preparation of annual budgets and income projections for the major gifts budget line, and regularly review revenue and expenses, and progress to goals.
- Stay aware and informed of the status of the HD drug development pipeline, HDSA-funded research, and HDSA mission programs and services.
- Maintain collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the Society’s achievement of goals and help foster a positive work environment.
- Consistently apply the society’s organizational values of HD Families First, Honesty & Integrity Always, Respect, and Collaboration in everything we do.
- Develop a personal commitment and understanding of Huntington’s disease and those who have it and be able to articulate the programs of HDSA that need support.
Candidate Qualifications
- Passion for Society’s mission, demonstrated commitment to the non-profit sector, and a commitment to serving the HD community.
- Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Five-plus years’ successful experience in fundraising, front-line experience with demonstrated success in managing and growing a major donor program and a portfolio of donors and prospects.
- Must have personally secured 6+ figure gifts from donors.
- Experience working within a National Voluntary Health Agency with a national network of chapters and/or affiliates.
- Familiar with supporting special event fundraisers, such as walks and galas.
- Excellent communication, organization, and presentation skills with the ability to deal with sensitive issues, both directly and passionately, to garner support for HDSA’s mission.
- Flexible and a self-starter; able to multi-task while also being highly detail oriented.
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Society’s mission.
- Must possess a high level of independence and EQ in accomplishing the responsibilities of the position and meet deadlines with flexibility, attention to detail, and good humor.
- Mastery of Microsoft Office suite and CRM/fundraising software preferred, experience with DonorView a plus.
- Energetic team player who will fit seamlessly into a small organization that is driven to accomplish its mission.
- Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
- Fully remote or hybrid if in the NYC market, with travel of up to 25%.
