Position

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Major Gifts Officer will play a key role in growing and stewarding Hire Heroes USA’s base of high net worth donors, with a focus on securing major gifts to support the organization's mission and long-term sustainability. This individual will be responsible for leading efforts to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors with a particular emphasis on high net worth individuals, capital campaigns, and signature fundraising events, including the annual New York City fundraising dinner and other major donor events.

*This is a full-time, remote position*

Responsibilities

  • Major Donor Identification & Cultivation: Build and manage a portfolio of high net worth donors and prospects capable of making significant contributions. Conduct research to identify new major donor prospects and develop tailored cultivation strategies.
  • Solicitation & Stewardship: Develop and implement personalized solicitation plans for donors in the portfolio. Engage donors through one-on-one meetings, personalized communications, and meaningful donor engagement opportunities.
  • Capital Campaigns: Lead efforts to plan and execute capital campaigns, working closely with internal leadership and external partners to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Signature Events: Oversee and manage major donor engagement for key fundraising events, including the annual Hire Heroes USA New York City fundraising dinner. Collaborate with key board members leading the event to ensure a seamless experience for high net worth attendees and to maximize fundraising outcomes.
  • Collaboration: Partner with the Chief Development Officer and the Corporate Partnerships team to develop and execute strategies that align with the organization's overall development goals. Work closely with the Marketing and Communications team to craft compelling donor materials.
  • Board Engagement: Collaborate with board members to leverage their networks and support major donor fundraising efforts. Provide board members with the tools and information needed to engage with potential donors.
  • Data Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of donor interactions and gifts in the organization's CRM system. Use data to track progress toward fundraising goals and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Communication: Must be able to confidently engage in donor conversations, present the organization’s mission effectively, and make compelling asks. Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey Hire Heroes USA's mission and impact.
Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in major gifts fundraising or a related field, with a proven track record of securing six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • Experience with capital campaigns and high-profile fundraising events. Familiarity with the philanthropic landscape and high net worth networks. Proven track record of meeting and exceeding major gift fundraising goals.
  • Ability to develop and nurture long-term relationships with high-net-worth donors, corporate executives, and foundation representatives. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with high net worth individuals.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Skilled in managing multiple donor relationships at different stages in the moves management process.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams, especially Corporate Partnerships, Marketing and Communications, and the Board of Directors, to develop strategic engagement opportunities.
  • Capable of identifying new opportunities, thinking creatively, and building new fundraising strategies beyond traditional approaches. Comfortable with rejection, understanding that donor cultivation takes time, and staying motivated to achieve long-term success.
  • Strong Research and Data Analysis Skills. Proficiency in using CRM systems to track donor interactions and manage fundraising pipelines. Ability to use donor data, wealth screening tools, and CRM insights to identify new major gift prospects.
  • Ability to travel as needed to meet with donors and attend key events.
  • Experience working in a mission-driven nonprofit organization, particularly in veteran services or workforce development.
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation preferred.
Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • General office environment; temperature controlled.
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment, e.g. copiers, phones, computers.
  • Travel Required: Up to 25%.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
Estimated New Hire Salary: $110,000 - $130,000 Annually + Competitive Bonus Structure

Hire Heroes USA may offer additional compensation to include annual bonuses, merit increases, cost of living, special or extra assignments outside scope of the role, cell phone stipend, internet stipend, relocation, awards, compensatory time off, overtime, and gaining knowledge and proficiency through certifications and licensing.
