Job summary

The City of Denison is seeking a Public Works/Utility Maintenance worker to perform routine field maintenance and assist other divisions as needed. You will drive and operate heavy equipment, service city vehicles, and work with water, gas, and wastewater infrastructure in diverse outdoor settings.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to meet auto liability carrier standards. Safety PPE and teamwork are essential in this role.

Description

Performs routine public works and/or utility maintenance and repair. Performs other duties to include assisting other Public Works divisions as required.

Examples of Duties

• Performs utility field work related to Public Works maintenance and repair. Divisions include sanitation, streets, parks and recreation, and distribution/collection.
• Assist field crews with installation, repair, maintenance of parks, city streets, residential and commercial pick up, and water/wastewater infrastructure.
• Drive and operate heavy equipment for divisional maintenance/repair activities.
• Services equipment and City vehicles with water, gas, oil and air.
• Operate equipment/tools such as pipe saws, cutters, wrenches, weed eaters, mowers, and other various items, etc.
• Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of traffic safety principles.
• Ability to locate specific addresses.
• Knowledge of safe operations of heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
• Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance procedures.
• Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment in a safe and proper manner.
• Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.
• Knowledge of utility markings and clearances and rules for safe equipment operation in close proximity to underground and overhead utility facilities.
• Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize all Personal Protective Equipment necessary.
• Knowledge of legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
• Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities.
• Ability to read and understand grade and alignment stakes set by others.
• Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
• Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
• Ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
