Job summary

The City of Heath is seeking a Maintenance Worker - Utilities to perform maintenance, repair, and installation tasks on water and wastewater systems, including mains, meters, hydrants, and lift stations.

You will operate hand tools, read meters, assist street and park departments, and be scheduled on call for nights, weekends, and holidays. A high school diploma or GED and Texas driver's license are required.

Qualifications

  • High school graduation or GED plus two years of related experience.
  • Equivalents allowed per job description.
  • Knowledge of maintenance principles and safety procedures.
  • Familiarity with office software and SCADA systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair and install items relating to water and wastewater systems.
  • Maintains and repairs water mains, wastewater mains, service lines, meters, valves, fire hydrants.
  • Scheduled on call for nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Installs, connects, services and reads water meters.
  • Repairs lift stations.
  • Uses hand tools to dig trenches and move dirt.
  • May assist Street and Park Departments with related duties.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

To perform a variety of activities in support of water and wastewater facilities.

Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties:
  • Maintain, repair and install items relating to water and wastewater systems. Operates various types of equipment necessary in the daily repair, installation and maintenance of the above.
  • Maintains and performs repairs on water mains, wastewater mains, service lines, service laterals, meters, meter boxes, cleanouts, manholes, valves and fire hydrants.
  • Scheduled on call for nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
  • Installs, connects, services and reads water meters.
  • Repairs lift stations.
  • Uses hand tools to dig ditches or holes, and shovels dirt, gravel, asphalt, or sand.
  • Dependable/ Punctual at work and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness.
  • May assist the Street Department with street and drainage duties as needed.
  • May assist with Park Department activities as needed.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Maintenance Principles: processes involved in upkeep of property and equipment to the optimum state of cleanliness, repair, and efficiency.
  • Office Software: current database programs including work order software, general programs used by the city and become trained on the City's SCADA software.
  • Basic Math: add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly.
  • Safety: enclosed space, trench safety, and safety procedures related to the job. Must wear required safety equipment and uniform.
Skill/Ability to:
  • Cooperation: establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Accuracy: attention to detail in dealing with numbers, words, and ideas.
  • Mechanical/Technical: safely operating diverse equipment including hand tools, large pumps, meters, tractors, sewer equipment, fire hydrants, and valves.
  • Oral Comprehension: listening to and understanding information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Sequencing: correctly following a given rule or set of rules to arrange things or actions.
  • Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Oral Expression: communicating information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
Education and Experience:
  • High school graduation or G.E.D. plus two years of related experience.
  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Must reside within a 60-minute response time from City Hall.
Certifications and Licenses Required:
  • Valid class C Texas driver's license.
  • Desirable to maintain a "C" Water and Level I Wastewater TCEQ operations certificate or be able to obtain one 24 months from the date of employment.

Working Environment:

The person performing the duties of the Maintenance Worker - Utilities may encounter the following working conditions: extreme vibration, dirty environment, electrical hazards, extreme temperatures or weather conditions, air contamination, moving mechanical parts, noise, machinery such as excavators, loaders, and dozers, and the responsibility for the safety of others.
