This position will be located at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, 148 Taum Sauk Trail, Middle Brook, MO 63656. Candidates will typically work 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and may be required to work weekends and holidays.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys variation in the workday. In this position, you will have the opportunity to assist in stewardship and maintenance activities. This includes prescribed burns, invasive species management, and performing various maintenance and repair projects around the park. You will have the opportunity to see firsthand how your work impacts the thousands of visitors at the park annually.
- Responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of state buildings and infrastructure, equipment, and vehicles.
- Work in a variety of trade areas such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, concrete and masonry, painting, welding, mechanical repair, water/wastewater, and groundskeeping.
- Operate and maintain vehicles, lawn mowers, tractors, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and similar mechanical equipment. Ability to use various hand tools.
- Responsible for complying with all water/wastewater permit requirements. Testing of water and wastewater to ensure compliance with environmental regulations
- Prepare cost estimates for projects and assist with the purchasing of materials. Work within budget and specified timeframes.
- Train and assign daily job duties of full-time and seasonal employes, while ensuring a safe work environment. Work with supervisors to establish maintenance and repair priorities.
- Conduct monthly safety meetings. Monitor facility, identify and report safety issues which may affect staff and the public.
- Be familiar with park rules and regulations and be prepared to educate visitors of those rules in a professional and courteous manner.
- This position is required to obtain and maintain MSP Basic Fire Training, a wastewater class D certification, and drinking water distribution and treatment certifications. If you do not currently possess this license/certification, you will be given twelve months to obtain necessary license/certification.

- Mechanical: Knowledgeofmachinesandtools,includingtheirdesigns,uses,benefits,repair, and maintenance.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
- 4 - 6 years of experience in any of the following trade areas: electrical, plumbing, concrete, and masonry, carpentry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience.)
Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements
- Ability to operate a vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.
- Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, evenings, and split shifts. Must work a minimum of one weekend per month during on season April through October.
- Available to participate in meetings, workshops and seminars requiring overnight stays.
- Must be able to perform strenuous physical outdoor work in extreme or inclement weather conditions, able to stand or walk on uneven terrain for extended periods, lift, carry and load up to 50 pounds repeatedly, bend, stoop, crawl and work on elevated surfaces, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, backpack blowers, and climb ladders.
