Job Summary

Employees in this class perform routine labor and maintenance duties to maintain County roadways, right-of-ways, parks, facilities, storm water drainage, and other areas for an assigned County department. This is an entry-level position requiring minimal manipulative skill or prior experience. Tasks are often routine and repetitive, and after training, can be performed independently under general supervision.

Essential Functions

These are illustrative examples of the work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.

Depending on the department, duties may include:

• Maintaining grounds at County facilities, including mowing, weed clearing, hedging, fertilizing, pruning, and replacing plants and trees; using backpack blowers to clear debris.
• Maintaining drainage facilities by cleaning ditches and structures using manual and power tools.
• Performing minor plumbing, restroom cleaning, restocking supplies, and trash pickup.
• Performing small engine and equipment maintenance, such as oil changes, blade sharpening, and checking fluids and tire pressure.
• Cleaning power tools, maintaining pool filters and chemicals, and assembling/installing recreational equipment and fences.
• Performing minor electrical work, painting equipment and structures.
• Operating light-duty trucks and performing traffic control at construction sites.
• Assembling erosion control measures and preparing sports fields.

Additional Duties

Employees may be assigned other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and organizational structure.
• Some knowledge of manual maintenance methods, tools, and equipment.
• Ability to follow routine instructions and safety procedures.
• Ability to lift heavy objects over short distances and lighter objects over longer distances.
• Ability to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.
• Ability to learn through on-the-job training.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily outdoors, with exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, water, machinery, and weather extremes. Protective gear may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to read and write English.
• Valid Georgia driver's license.

Preference

Some experience in general labor work is preferred.
