Job summary

Calleguas Municipal Water District is seeking an entry-level Maintenance Worker I to assist in the System Maintenance division. You will support pipeline maintenance, weed abatement, light construction, and traffic control as part of a small crew.

Responsibilities include following work orders, performing semi-skilled repairs on pipelines and appurtenances, installing manholes and valve stacks, and supporting roadway and erosion control projects.

Job description

This entry level position performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the System Maintenance division. It assists with pipeline maintenance and repair, and performs supervised weed abatement, light construction, building maintenance and traffic control.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not include supervisory responsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Maintenance Worker I Duties

• Receive and follow written and oral work assignment from crew leaders and supervisors.
• Perform semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of pipelines and appurtenances, including main line isolation valves, vacuum and air release valves, blow-off valves, pump wells, and access manholes.
• Assist in the installation and repair of manholes, vault lids, and valve stacks.
• Participate in construction activities such as the installation and repair of concrete pads, masonry walls, erosion control projects, and roadways.
• Safely operate vehicles, hand or power tools, pumps, portable generators, blowers, and drilling and cutting machines to perform installation, modification, maintenance and repair of water distribution systems and integral components.
• Clean and paint vaults, pipes, cabinets, pumps, motors and buildings.
• Perform preventative maintenance on a wide variety of system components.
• Perform weed abatement at facilities throughout the District.
• Maintain and install landscaping and irrigation systems throughout the District.
• Provide traffic control and assist other departments as necessary.
• Be responsible for personal safety and the safety of coworkers by recognizing hazards and potentially hazardous situations and having an awareness of safe practices on the job site.
• Communicate with crew leaders and supervisors to ensure workflow coordination and efficiency.
• Proficiently use the District’s asset management workorder system.
• Foster and promote a positive and collaborative work environment.
• Perform other work as assigned.

• Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and blueprints.
• Fill out work orders and daily forms and be able to communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, vendors, contractors, and purveyors.
• Knowledge of safety requirements for working in and around heavy equipment, power equipment, construction sites, high voltages, paint, and in confined spaces.
• Apply a common sense understanding in carrying out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and be able to solve day-to-day problems that may occur in stressful environments.
• Ability to work with supervision and respond appropriately to direction, feedback, evaluation, and coaching.
• Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
• Observe proper safety precautions.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• One to three months of related experience and/or training.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Should have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Must be able to operate District light and medium duty trucks, forklifts, compressors, jackhammers, a wide range of hand and power tools, and other equipment common to a water system. Must also be able to use radio and telephones to communicate.

Must be able to operate a vehicle to travel to other District facilities for maintenance, inspection, and testing. Competently use computers, office equipment, and other devices. Must have general knowledge of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Sitting, standing, bending, walkingoften on uneven terrain in an outdoor environment is required as well as walking and crawling through pipelines while inspecting construction projects.
• Manual dexterity anduse of hands and fingers to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, and talking, hearing, and smelling are all necessary.
• Climbing or balancing is often required.
• The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• The employee is regularly required to wear employer-provided personal protective equipment. Must be capable of wearing respiratory equipment to include half, full face, and supplied air systems.

A Maintenance Worker I is normally required to work in an outdoor environment, which frequently consists of hillsides and uneven terrain and exposure to allergens. In addition, the employee may work in the industrial environment of the water treatment plant, wellfields, pipelines, support structures, construction sites, and confined-space environments and is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
The employee is occasionally exposed to interior wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
The employee is a designated Disaster Service Worker and is occasionally called upon to work overtime or odd schedules.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possess a California Motor Vehicle Operators License and provide proof of a good driving record, i.e., a driving record provided by the DMV showing less than 2 points assessed in the last 36 months and/or no serious or multiple traffic violations or accidents or failure to appear notices within the last 36 months.
• Agree to authorize background reference checking with past employers and personal references.
• Agree to submit to and pass the District’s pre-employment, post-offer medical examination performed by a physician chosen and paid-for by the District.
• Possess or obtain aCalifornia Water Resources Control BoardWater Distribution Grade 1 or higher certificate within 18 months of hire and remain in good standing.
• The employee must also be able to work around chlorine and other chemicals used in the treatment of water which are classified by Title 8, California Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, Code Section 339 as extremely hazardous and toxic materials.
