Job summary

El Toro Water District in Lake Forest, CA is seeking a skilled Maintenance Worker for our water distribution and sewer facilities team. This full-time opening follows a 9/80 schedule: nine-hour shifts Monday–Thursday (7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and eight-hour shifts Fridays (7:00 a.m.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Possession of a Class C California Driver's License with ability to obtain Class A.
  • Ability to obtain CDPH T-1 and D-1 licenses as required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled maintenance work and assist in installing, maintaining, and repairing water/sewer mains and related equipment.
  • Operate hand and power tools and equipment such as backhoes and skip loaders as needed.
  • Repair streets and sidewalks after maintenance work; perform related patching.
  • Operate dump/utility trucks and tow small trailers.
  • Provide notice of potential service interruptions to customers when necessary.
  • Maintain and inspect vehicles and equipment; report malfunctions.
  • Support safe and orderly work environment and assist with traffic control.
  • Use computers for data entry and time cards; respond to emergency calls.
  • Perform water quality sampling and testing as required.

Education

WORK SCHEDULE

This position is a (9/80) work schedule with nine-hour shifts (7:00a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Monday – Thursday and eight hour shifts on Friday (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) with every other Friday off. Under direction of a Crew Chief, perform skilled maintenance work under close supervision associated with installing, maintaining, and repairing water distribution and sewage collection facilities.

Examples of Duties
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled maintenance work and assist in the installation, maintenance, replacement and repair of water and sewer mains, services, leaks, fire hydrants, valves, water meters and other water distribution and sewer collection equipment, facilities and appurtenances.
  • May operate a variety of hand and power tools as well as mechanical equipment such as backhoes and skip loaders in the performance of regular duties.
  • Perform concrete and asphalt repair and patchwork to streets, sidewalks, around fire hydrants and other areas damaged or disturbed during maintenance, installation or repair of water distribution and sewage collection facilities.
  • Operate a dump truck, utility truck or other similar type of equipment with an ability to tow small trailers.
  • May advise customers of the potential for service interruptions or other impacts as a result of maintenance, repair, or service installation activities.
  • Maintain and inspect assigned vehicles and equipment including cleaning, routine maintenance, and detection and reporting of equipment malfunctions and breakdowns as needed.
  • Provide for a safe and orderly work environment.
  • Assist in setting up traffic control.
  • Use a computer to perform job related tasks including data entry and time cards.
  • Respond to emergency calls at irregular hours.
  • Perform water quality sampling and testing such as chlorine residual analysis.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Class “C” California Driver's License.
  • Ability to obtain a Class “A” California Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain a California CDPH T-1 Treatment Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain a California CDPH D-1 Distribution Operator

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

On a regular basis the following requirements will apply unless otherwise noted. Ability to operate job related equipment; carry, push, pull, reach for and lift equipment, parts or material weighing up to 60 pounds; walk, sit and/or stand for extended periods of time; walk on uneven terrain and work in an outdoor environment with possible exposure to harsh weather conditions, heavy equipment, dust, noise and potentially hazardous substances; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend at the waist and neck, crawl and climb during maintenance and repair work; work in confined spaces, trenches and elevated areas; occasionally turn valves of different sizes at different pressures. Ability to hear and focus vision for close work and adjust at distances as well as hand to eye coordination required.
