Job description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Observes devices and equipment in operation and troubleshoots problems.
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment to make necessary repairs.
  • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
  • Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
  • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts, installs special functional and structural parts in devices, lubricates and cleans parts.
  • Performs various electro‑mechanical maintenance functions.
  • Sets up and operates lathe, drill press, grinder and other metal‑working tools to make and repair parts.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Associate’s Degree or equivalent from a two‑year technical school studying applied trades, plus a six months to one year of directly related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization; read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet applications; must be familiar with internet research and the use of e‑mail.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

No certificates or previous experience is required, but the employee must be willing to further their education with any experience that will help perform the job more efficiently (e.g., after‑work hours welding classes, machine shop classes).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform essential functions. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Must actively support the Health Safety and Environmental policy, immediately report all safety hazards and correct them when able to safely do so. Participate in all required safety training, meetings, inspections, and use all required personal protective equipment.
