Job Title: Solid Waste Collection Worker

Responsibilities:

1. Rides with various equipment operators to collect solid waste.
2. Loads and unloads various materials.
3. Performs routine maintenance on equipment (e.g., greasing, checking air pressure, oil, and other fluids) and informs appropriate personnel of necessary major repairs.
4. Loads and empties refuse, leaf and limb wastes, or recyclables into the truck.
5. Assists in ensuring the truck is properly cleaned, serviced, and in proper operating condition before leaving on route.
6. Assists in washing vehicles and equipment.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of residential refuse, leaf and limb, and recycling collection procedures and routes.
2. Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.
3. Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance techniques for equipment and vehicles.
4. Skill in oral communication.
5. Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
6. No experience requirements.
7. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must frequently lift, push, pull, and/or move more than 100 pounds. Successful passage of a Functional Prework Screen administered by a professional third-party is required.

Safety and Work Environment:

This position is safety-sensitive and involves outdoor work in noisy, dusty, dirty environments with exposure to machinery, chemicals, odors, and weather conditions. Protective gear such as masks, goggles, ear protection, safety shoes, or gloves is required. The work is supervised by the Crew Leader - Solid Waste, who assigns work and checks for compliance and quality.
