Job description

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Vactor Operator in the Stormwater Division of Public Works.

In this role, you'll perform skilled work operating heavy motorized equipment involved in stormwater maintenance. Your work may include repairs and renovations to the stormwater conveyance system, including pipes, manholes, and inlets. You'll operate a combination sewer cleaner vehicle, dump truck, and other assigned equipment, along with the hand tools needed to get the job done. You may also assist with CCTV inspections and pipe repair operations along the way.

Safety will always be part of the job — you'll follow all safety regulations related to your work area and equipment use.

Because stormwater needs don't always follow a standard schedule, you should expect some standby work, including occasional nights, holidays, and weekends. You'll also operate heavy and light equipment during snow removal efforts, and help out during special events and emergency situations, which may include some nights and weekends as needed.

To be considered for this position, you'll need a high school diploma or GED, along with one to three years of related experience and/or training in storm drain work, street maintenance, dump truck operation, and heavy manual labor — or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with an N (Tanker) endorsement is required, or you'll need the ability to obtain one within six months of employment. There may be other duties as assigned.

This is a non-exempt position.
