Job summary

The City of Roanoke's Fleet Division seeks a motivated worker to service and operate automotive and construction equipment, including wreckers and field service units. A high school diploma or GED is required, with 1–3 years of related experience. CDL with endorsements must be obtained within 6 months, and ASE certification within 2.5 years.

  • Support snow removal, events, and emergency tasks as needed.
  • Work with temporary crews and may train others.

Job description

The City of Roanoke's Fleet Division is seeking a highly motivated, hard worker to service and maintain automotive and light/heavy construction equipment and to operate automotive equipment such as wreckers, tankers, and field service unit. The successful applicant will grease and lubricate a variety of motorized equipment including automobiles and light/heavy construction equipment; change oil, service batteries; change and repair tires; and wash and polish motor equipment. Excellent opportunities to expand knowledge and skills. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); some related experience and/or training in servicing automotive/construction equipment, repair/mounting of tires and operation of wrecker units; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires CDL with appropriate endorsements within 6 months of employment. Attainment of ASE certification required within 2.5 years of employment.

SUMMARY

Performs semi-skilled work in the operation of automotive and/or mechanical equipment in connection with the performance of a variety of manual tasks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

may include the following depending on the area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates street sweeper and/or dump truck, loads and unloads general dirt, timber, chemical, refuse and other materials
  • Operates light motorized equipment such as riding and push mowers, fork lift, chipper, and ice resurfacing machine
  • Performs maintenance tasks such as chair and table repairs, rough carpentry, light equipment repair, concrete work, storm drain repair and related tasks
  • Performs general laborer and custodial tasks such as filter replacement, drain and sewer line cleaning, shoveling snow, cutting grass, digging, loading, brush removal, asphalt raking, and cleaning buildings
  • Operates and maintains various types of hand and small power tools
  • Assists in maintaining inventory and control for all tools, maintenance and equipment
  • Transports crew engaged in semi-skilled repair maintenance and custodial activities
  • Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment
  • Operates light and heavy equipment in snow removal
  • May be required to train other operators
  • Works with and helps guide temporary and part-time crews in accomplishing tasks
  • May be required to effectively use computer to access email and event set-up information
  • Performs minor repair of buildings, doors, windows and floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items
  • Greases and lubricates a variety of motorized equipment including automobiles, light/heavy construction equipment
  • Performs less skilled mechanical tasks such as replacement of hoses, batteries, bulbs, fuses, mufflers, etc.
  • Changes oil, filters, etc. on variety of motorized equipment, including automobiles, light/heavy construction equipment
  • Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
  • May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
  • May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings.
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but may require the occasional direction of helpers, seasonal employees, part-time and temporary employees

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in the operation of motorized equipment and the performance of heavy manual labor; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate class A, B, or C commercial driver's license within 6 months of employment
