Job summary

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Vactor Operator in the Stormwater Division of Public Works. This skilled role operates heavy equipment for stormwater maintenance, including the Vactor, CCTV inspections, and related tasks.

Requires a high school diploma or GED and 1–3 years of related experience, plus a valid Class B CDL with N endorsement (or ability to obtain within six months). This non-exempt position supports snow removal, events, and emergencies as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 1–3 years related stormwater or street maintenance experience.
• Experience operating dump trucks and heavy manual labor tasks as part of storm drain work.
• Ability to read safety rules and maintenance manuals and follow procedures.

Responsibilities

• Operate Vactor, CCTV van, street sweeper, dump truck and other heavy equipment.
• Perform repairs and adjustments to equipment and assist with inspections.
• Support CCTV inspections and pipe repair operations as needed.
• Assist with snow removal, event support, and emergency tasks, including nights/weekends.
• May supervise crew in absence of supervisor and perform general labor when not operating.
• Follow safety regulations and wear respiratory protection if required.
