Job description

The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to fill a vacant Sign Marking Maintenance Technician Level II position in our Public Works/Transportation Division/Traffic Sign Shop.

Position Overview

This role involves working as part of a crew responsible for traffic markings and signage within the public right-of-way. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate records of traffic marking activities using an asset management database and creating and managing work orders through the VueWorks system.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operate specialized equipment such as long-line striping trucks, sign trucks, and emergency barricade trucks.
2. Participate in snow removal operations and be on a rotating schedule for emergency barricade duties and special events.
3. Use power tools and basic technical proficiency with tablets or iPads.
4. Install, repair, and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings according to MUTCD standards.
5. Set up work zones following Virginia Work Area Protection Manual guidelines.
6. Assist with sign fabrication and laying down thermoplastic markings.
7. Maintain detailed records of work activities and materials used.
8. Collaborate with team members and follow instructions from supervisors.
9. Assist during emergency events and coordinate with police, fire/EMS, and other agencies.
10. Participate in snow removal and other citywide operations as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Three to five years of experience with traffic markings and signage.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license; Class B CDL required within 12 months of hire.
• Basic work-zone safety certification within the first year of employment.
• Experience with power tools and proficiency with tablets or iPads.
