Job description

The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player, to fill a vacant Sign Marking Maintenance Technician Level II position in our Public Works/ Transportation Division/ Traffic Sign Shop.

This person will serve as a member of a three- to five-person crew responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to traffic markings and signage within the public right-of-way. They will be responsible for maintaining accurate daily, weekly, and monthly records of traffic marking activities using an asset management database. The employee will also create and manage work orders through the VueWorks work order system.

This position involves operating specialized equipment, including the long-line striping truck, the sign truck, and the emergency barricade truck. The employee will also participate in snow removal operations and will be placed on a rotating schedule for emergency barricade duties and special events.

The role requires hands-on experience with power tools and a basic level of technical proficiency in using an iPad or tablet device. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, along with three to five years of experience working with traffic markings and signage. A valid Class B CDL driver’s license is required at the time of hire or must be obtained within 12 months. Additionally, a basic work-zone certification must be earned within the first year of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Discuss job requirements and receive detailed instructions from supervisor.
  • Inspect sign and marking installations in progress to ensure conformance with current MUTCD standards.
  • Requisition necessary equipment and materials in daily operation.
  • Maintain accurate shop daily operation log sheets and checklists using VueWorks system.
  • Work with a crew of 1-6 people and be able to listen to and follow instructions given.
  • Set up work zones as needed to ensure compliance with the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual.
  • Install and repair traffic signs and pavement marking throughout the City.
  • Assist crew with laying down hot applied thermoplastic.
  • Install, repair, and maintain street painting such as double yellow and skips.
  • Assist the sign fabricator with making signs.
  • Keep work order records using the Transportation current work order VueWorks system.
  • Assist the shop supervisor during emergency events and work with police, fire/EMS, and other governmental functions.
  • Participate in the City of Roanoke snow removal operations.
  • Perform any other tasks as deemed necessary by the Sign Shop Supervisor.

A High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.

A valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

One to three years of related work experience and training in the construction and maintenance of traffic markings and signs in the right of way.

Must have a CDL B or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

Some experience working in or around traffic.
