SARASOTA MANATEE AIRPORT AUTHORITY

JOB CLASS SPECIFICATION

JOB TITLE: Maintenance Technician I & II

REPORTS TO: Facilities Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Facilities

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

Under direct supervision, performs general labor and maintenance of Airport facilities, grounds, airfield, AOA ramps, and associated equipment. Performs manual labor in a variety of construction and maintenance functions. Work schedules will include weekends and nights and occasional overtime. On occasion may be subject to being called in during non-scheduled hours to respond to any situation related to the responsibilities of the position, or any situation determined necessary by the department.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Performs general maintenance work including, but not limited to concrete work, carpentry work, drywall, painting, tile work, wallpaper, and ceiling tile replacement, plumbing and irrigation repairs, landscaping, installation and replacement of door locks and hardware.
  2. Repairs and performs preventive maintenance on Authority owned mechanical equipment, including passenger boarding bridge repair and maintenance, conveyor system repair and maintenance, security gates, automatic entrance doors, and T-hangars.
  3. Repairs and performs preventive maintenance on Authority owned vehicles, including trucks, light and heavy, police vehicles, fire fighting vehicles, various mowing equipment, various tractors, various small engines, and various earth moving equipment.
  4. Paved area maintenance, including all runways, taxiways, ramps, and aprons associated with the Airport authority, maintained in accordance with FAA Part 139 guidelines.
  5. Painting, all phases, for various Authority equipment and properties, both indoor and outdoor.
  6. Runway and taxiway markings, surface painted signs, ramp, and movement areas; daily maintenance of the painting equipment.
  7. Electrical repairs and replacement of items as directed, including light changes and inspections, high and low voltage work under direct supervision.
  8. Airfield lighting, including assisting Airfield Electricians with diagnosing, repairing, and replacing all components of airfield lighting, guidance, and illuminated signage systems.
  9. Carpentry, all phases, including ceiling tile, floor covering, drywall, cabinet and casework fabrication, doors, locksmithing, painting, and trim; general remodeling.
  10. Plumbing, all phases, including urinal and toilet maintenance, main line drain cleaning, branch line drain cleaning, water fountain repairs, potable water cabinet repairs, water heater repairs and replacements, unclogging of all drain lines, and irrigation repairs.
  11. Roofing systems, all phases, including roofing repairs and inspections.
  12. Fabrication shop equipment, including welders, sheet metal tools, various cutting equipment, and measuring tools.
  13. Cuts grass, including airfield mowing, and inspects mowing equipment daily for safety and needed repairs.
  14. Repairs fences, fills holes including paved areas, performs heavy landscape work, fills washouts, and plants sod.
  15. Performs fertilization/pesticide/herbicide applications as needed.
  16. Cleans ramp, parking lots, runway, and taxiway.

Other Related Responsibilities:

Although usually assigned to one area, cross-trains with and assists other facilities personnel on an as-needed basis.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Painting equipment including striping machines, cleaning equipment including power washers, steam washers, and sweeper trucks, power and hand tools, and all manner of landscaping equipment including mowers, edgers, string trimmers, blowers, and fertilization/pesticide/herbicide equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Where "preferred" is indicated, the qualification is not essential.

Maintenance Technician I

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Valid Florida License or must obtain within (30) days of assuming position and a good driving record.
  3. Experience working with a trade, maintenance, landscaping, or equipment, preferred.

Maintenance Technician II

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. 3 years’ experience in a trade or trades such as plumbing, electrical, landscaping, painting, etc.
  3. Valid Florida License or must obtain within (30) days of assuming position and a good driving record.
  4. Graduation from or currently enrolled in a trade school or equivalent apprenticeship program, preferred.
  5. Valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of basic maintenance.
  2. Knowledge of potential safety hazards and related safety precautions.
  3. Knowledge of ground maintenance and equipment maintenance.
  4. Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  5. Ability to learn on the job, in a hands-on, physical labor environment.
  6. Ability to take and pass in-house computer-based training and safety program, as required.
  7. Ability to perform routine and physical work.
  8. Ability to understand and interpret oral and written instructions.
  9. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and fellow employees.
  10. Ability to read and comprehend plans and specifications, preferred.
  11. FAA Part 139 knowledge/experience, preferred.

Maintenance Technician I – preferred & Maintenance Technician II – required:

Ability to obtain and maintain any license or certificates needed to perform a specific job assignment.

Physical Requirements:

The Maintenance Technician must be physically fit to perform manual labor. Physical work is performed both outside and indoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time. Day and night shift work schedules are required.

Mental Requirements:

A Maintenance Technician performs general maintenance of Airport facilities, grounds, and equipment. The Maintenance Technician works wherever he/she is needed and in all kinds of weather conditions. Accordingly, the individual must be able to work with and understand instructions from various people and change work direction quickly.

Environmental Requirements:

The majority of a Maintenance Technician workday is spent working in a hands-on capacity on a variety of projects requiring labor outside and indoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods of time. Physical work is continuous. Day and night shift work schedules are required.
