Description
The Maintenance Technician I is an entry-level technician responsible for performing maintenance tasks under routine supervision and mentorship to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a chemical manufacturing facility. This role involves building expertise in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, troubleshooting, and repairing process equipment. The technician works through standardized procedures or shadowing, assists in troubleshooting malfunctions, is mentored by senior team members, and participates in continuous improvement initiatives.
The technician maintains all process and infrastructure assets on site, including pressure vessels, gas compressors, vacuum pumps, HVAC, boilers, hot oil circulators, cooling towers, compressed air and nitrogen systems, fire suppression, and wastewater operations.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly rounds to monitor boilers, air compressors, and cooling towers, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operation.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot the wastewater treatment facility, including routine and emergency operations, water sampling, and record-keeping.
- Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on pneumatic, hydraulic, and rotating equipment, ensuring compliance with standards.
- Assist in installing and repairing piping and tubing, ensuring proper layout and compatibility.
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance needs to minimize downtime.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance activities, maintaining accurate records.
- Follow all safety procedures, including permits, LOTO, line breaks, hot work, and confined space entry, and ensure PPE compliance.
- Operate industrial equipment such as forklifts and lifts, with proper training and certification.
- Interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and P&IDs to diagnose issues.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities with the maintenance team, collaborating with engineering to identify root causes and improve reliability.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in manufacturing with mechanical skills
- Troubleshooting skills in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
- Ability to read P&IDs, schematics, and technical drawings
- Experience with standard tools and equipment, including saws, drills, welding tools, and fabrication tools
- Knowledge of industrial safety standards
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces
Preferred:
- Experience in a PSM chemical manufacturing environment with classified electrical areas
- Training in Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP)
- Experience with API and ASME standards for pressure vessels and piping
- Experience with refrigeration systems
- Welding experience (stick, MIG, TIG)
- Familiarity with process instrumentation and variable frequency drives
