Job summary

Job description

This is a full-time, non-exempt position that reports to the Manager of Grounds and Building Services and is located on the JWCC campus in Quincy, Illinois. Position begins immediately.

Job Description

The Grounds Technician performs a variety of duties related to the maintenance and appearance of College grounds and facilities. Responsibilities include mowing, weed eating, trimming and pruning, landscaping, and snow and ice removal. The position is also responsible for applying approved lawn and grounds treatments and must possess, or be able to obtain, the required operator's spray license.

Additional duties include performing routine maintenance on grounds equipment, identifying equipment repair and replacement needs, and assisting with minor construction, remodeling, concrete repair, and painting projects throughout campus.

The Grounds Technician also provides support to the custodial team by assisting with daily operational needs, event setup and teardown, office moves, and other assigned duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide range of grounds maintenance duties to ensure campus grounds are safe, clean, and well maintained.
  • Mow, trim, prune, landscape, and perform snow and ice removal as needed.
  • Assist with the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields, including ball field upkeep.
  • Assist in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of ground maintenance and snow removal equipment.
  • Perform general carpentry, construction, remodeling, concrete work, and other maintenance projects as assigned.
  • Perform a variety of custodial and facility maintenance tasks to support campus operations.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following established safety procedures and using equipment properly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Facilities Department and campus operations.
Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalence required, one to two years grounds keeping and maintenance experience preferred.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years grounds keeping and maintenance experience preferred.

Skills And Competencies:

  • Ability to safely operate larger trucks for snow removal.
  • Proficient in operating tractors and other grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to complete assigned tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to prioritize work, demonstrate initiative, and consistently follow established safety procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Physical stamina to perform repetitive tasks and safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, lift, carry, reach, and grasp objects using hands and fingers throughout the workday.
  • Visual ability sufficient for color identification and distance perception.
  • Ability to communicate clearly using understandable verbal instructions and messages.
  • Hearing ability sufficient to understand spoken communication, alarms, and other workplace sounds.
  • Ability to detect recognizable odors when necessary for safe job performance.
  • Ability to obtain certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
  • Ability to obtain a pesticide/herbicide applicator license within one year of employment. Study materials and testing costs will be provided by JWCC.
Work Schedule
  • Full-time position with a typical schedule of Monday-Thursday (8am – 5pm) and Friday (8am – 12pm).
  • Work flexible and extended hours when necessary.
SALARY
  • This is a non-exempt position with an approximate hourly rate of $17.00 - $19.00.
