Job Description:
Role Purpose/Position Summary
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining equipment in accordance with electrical diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and/or manufacturer’s specifications. This must be done while adhering to safety procedures, protocols, and established Good Manufacturing Practices to ensure product integrity and compliance with customer specifications. The Maintenance Technician will utilize an electronic CMMS system to document work orders for work performed.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform routine maintenance such as inspecting drives, belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, and other preventive maintenance actions like lubrication of shafts, bearings, gears, and other machinery parts.
- Utilize an electronic CMMS system via a mobile device to document work performed.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain mechanical and electrical equipment including motors, pneumatics, electronic boards, PLCs, touch screens, displays, contactors, conveyors, and systems related to blending, scaling, filling, cartoning, coding/printing, electrical, compressed air, vacuum, hydraulic, and bulk-filling systems using appropriate tools and testing devices.
- Work with electrical systems ranging from single-phase to three-phase, with voltages from 5VDC to 480VAC.
- Maintain electrical wiring, relay logic, control, and safety circuits.
- Use blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
- Disassemble and rebuild gearboxes, clutches, actuators, and other equipment components.
- Record and report damaged, worn, or broken parts.
- Thoroughly clean machines and parts, reinstalling as needed.
- Proficient in using hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment such as drill presses, grinders, torches, plasma cutters, pipe threaders, brakes, presses, calipers, micrometers, and testing instruments.
- Fabricate parts, guards, and modifications for repairs and improvements.
- Weld various grades of metal for repairs and fabrication using MIG, TIG, and Arc techniques.
- Troubleshoot HVAC systems as needed.
- Follow all company policies, including safety and manufacturing protocols.
- Maintain responsibility for Food Safety and Quality, reporting issues promptly.
- Train junior or new technicians on equipment, procedures, and troubleshooting practices.
- Train operators and support staff on best practices, operation, and setup of equipment.
- Complete preventive maintenance, product changeovers, corrective, and breakdown maintenance as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (education, skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Entry Level and Above
- Ability to write work orders, parts requests, shift logs, and routine reports.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, manuals, and operational documents.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, crouch, reach, climb, and sit as required.
- Requisite hand-eye coordination and ability to use ladders/stairs.
- Competency with PC or tablets and handheld devices.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally with assistance.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- At least 2 years of industrial experience, preferably in food manufacturing.
Mid-Level and Above
- 2–6 years of industrial experience in a similar role, preferably in food manufacturing.
- 2-year technical or community college degree preferred.
- Experience with electrical controls and troubleshooting.
- Basic to intermediate PLC knowledge preferred.
Advanced Level
- 7+ years of industrial experience, preferably in the food industry.
- 2-year AAS degree or higher preferred.
- Advanced PLC troubleshooting skills.
- Electrician’s license and welding certification preferred.
- Metal fabrication experience preferred.
