Job summary

The City of Richmond's Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities seeks a Maintenance Technician (Trails) to maintain and repair parks, equipment, and facilities across the City of Richmond.

Under the guidance of the Labor Crew Chief and Tech Senior, you will operate light and heavy equipment, perform repairs, keep records and inventory, and help ensure safe handling of hazardous materials while upholding safety policies.

Job description

The Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Technician (Trails). This job class maintains and makes repairs for the City of Richmond’s parks, specialized equipment, and facilities through the performance of skilled labor and technical work.

Incumbents will serve as crew members under the guidance of Labor Crew Chief and Tech Senior. Work may include assessing and identifying repair needs and recommending action; providing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and parts; operating assigned light and heavy equipment, machinery, or shop equipment; maintaining records and inventory; recommending equipment and supply purchases; maintaining cleanliness of work areas, tools, and equipment; ensuring safe use of hazardous materials and chemicals; adhering to all safety policies and procedures.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• High School Diploma or GED or specialized vocational training
• Two years of maintenance experience related to assignment
• An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• 1 year work experience in parks and/or community facilities or related field
• Experience with community/volunteer engagement

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Some assignments may require a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
• Some assignments mayrequire a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
• Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, finger, feel, and hear; and occasionally crouch, crawl, and talk. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
