Job summary

The Newport News Sheriff’s Office invites applications for an experienced Maintenance Technician to support two jail facilities housing over 500 inmates. The role focuses on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and building maintenance tasks within a correctional setting.

Applicants should have hands-on experience in maintenance functions and be capable of working in a secure environment. This is a full-time position offering the department’s comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Physically active role requiring sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching and climbing.
• Ability to push, lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, and carry equipment.
• Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for maintenance tasks.
• Work in a correctional setting with interaction among city technicians, contractors and the public.
• Full-time position.

The Newport News Sheriff’s Office has an immediate opening for anexperienced, dedicated Maintenance Technician. The Sheriff’s Office operates two jail facilities housing over 500 inmates.

The Maintenance Technician will assist the Sheriff’s Office with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and building maintenance functions.

Applicants must have experience in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and building maintenance functions.

The applicant must be capable of performing general mechanical and maintenance duties. The position requires general and specific knowledge of maintenance functions with an emphasis on plumbing and electrical work.Applicants must be capable of working in a correction's setting. The position is a fulltime position.

Job Requirements

• Requires a considerable amount of physical activity, including extended periods of sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping and climbing.
• Work is performed indoors, outdoors and in confined spaces.
• Must be able to push frequently, lift and carry equipment, supplies and other materials weighing up to 50 pounds and to occasionally push, pull, lift and carry equipment, supplies and materials up to 75 lbs.
• Must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to use arms and hands to reach, finger, feel, grasp and to handle tools and equipment utilized in maintenance and repair activities.
• Requires interaction with other city technicians, contractors and the general public.
