Job summary

The Northwest School in Seattle, WA is seeking a Maintenance Tech to help maintain a one-acre campus and six buildings. You will perform daily outdoor inspections, basic repairs, and event support, reporting to the Director of Facilities and Transportation.

  • Perform basic maintenance tasks (plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, bulbs).
  • Move heavy equipment and furniture as needed; build simple items like bookshelves.
  • Disarm security system and unlock doors as buildings open.
  • Coordinate and set up for special events.

Position Type: Full Time Administrative Faculty

Salary Range: $27.00 - $32.00 Hourly

The Northwest School is an independent day and boarding school. We serve students in grades 6 to 12 on an urban campus in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. We provide an interdisciplinary liberal arts education that nurtures compassionate, globally aware and environmentally conscious individuals who find joy in learning and are ready to inspire and innovate in our interconnected world.

The Facilities Team at Northwest maintains a one-acre campus comprised of Six buildings and multiple outdoor spaces. The team is responsible for general maintenance and repairs around campus, interfacing with vendors, event support, and safety.

This Maintenance Tech reports directly to the Director of Facilities and Transportation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Daily inspection of outdoor campus perimeter areas for any accumulations of trash and biohazardous and dispose of.
  • Daily monitoring for graffiti, stickers, and any foreseeable vandalism that can quickly and easily be removed from campus buildings and associated infrastructure.
  • Responsible for the removal of seasonal leaves, snow, or ice from the premises.
  • Respond to any major spills or other cleaning crises.
  • Survey daily work order ticketing system (SchoolDude) and complete each item according to priority/difficulty level and effective time management with high output results.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks from plumbing, electrical, drywall repair, painting, and light bulb replacement or willingness to learn from Facilities Team members.
  • Move heavy equipment and furniture such as desks, tables, office machines, appliances, and cabinets.
  • Clean clogged drains and sewer lines.
  • Construct simple items such as bookshelves.
  • Complete minor repairs and building improvements.
  • Disarm buildings’ security system and unlock doors as part of opening buildings each day.
  • When applicable, place safety hazard signs in the building including wet paint and wet floor warning signs.
  • Be responsible for coordination, and set up (move furniture, etc.) required for special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school’s mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, environmental sustainability, and global perspective.
  • A commitment to a learning and working culture where all community members feel seen, valued, and heard.
  • Basic carpentry, drywall, painting, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical skills up to any licensing requirement or willingness to learn.
  • Assist Director of Facilities and Transportation and Building Engineer.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years related maintenance work or a combination of skills and experience sufficient to perform the job's essential duties.
  • Enjoy working with adolescents aged 11-18.
  • An ability to work both independently and as a productive member of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal form.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • A valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to use email systems, such as Microsoft Outlook.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary is highly competitive with top independent schools in the region and commensurate with education and experience. Hourly wage is $27-32/hr. depending on experience for 40 hours each week.
