The Northwest School in Seattle, WA is seeking a part-time Athletic Trainer for a 10-month schedule to support Upper School athletics. The role focuses on prevention, evaluation, and care of athletic injuries, and on communication with students, families, and medical providers.

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree, NATA certification, and CPR/First Aid/AED certification, with strong organization and communication skills and availability as directed by the Athletic Director.

Position Summary

We are seeking a candidate who will support the school’s mission of diversity and inclusion and who has a background that displays and proves an understanding of cultural fluency. The Athletic Trainer will report to and be supervised by the Athletic Director. The Athletic Training program entails and emphasizes prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of athletic injuries; rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries; ordering/maintaining inventory for first aid supplies/equipment; student recordkeeping; and student, parent, and faculty communication regarding athletic injuries. The Athletic Trainer serves as a liaison between licensed medical providers, coaches, athletes, and parents/guardians, and as such, will be responsible for counseling of student-athletes and their families through times of injury and recovery.

Essential Functions

A qualified candidate will be able to manage the following key responsibilities and tasks, while also being able to complete other duties as assigned.

Event Operations
  • Oversee athletic training coverage for Upper School athletes, including the supervision of practices, games, and special events
  • Serve as the primary on-site Athletic Trainer at home athletic events, as well as weekend, summer, and off-campus athletic events as assigned by the Athletic Director
  • Coordinate Athletic Training coverage for same-day events and multi-school events
Injury and Return to Play Protocols
  • Provide and coordinate injury treatment, rehabilitation, and cognitive assessments while maintaining related records for all students
  • Refer athletic injuries to appropriate medical providers for diagnosis and/or treatment
  • Provide accurate and timely treatment protocols as directed by the athlete’s licensed medical provider
  • Ensure that athletes participate only when physically able to do so and that instructions provided by medical providers are understood and followed
  • Communicate with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, and faculty/staff regarding student-athlete injuries
  • Conduct on-site rehabilitation programs for student athletes
  • Manage and conduct all ImPACT baseline concussion testing for Upper School Athletes
Health, Safety and Compliance
  • Advise coaches of flexibility, strengthening, and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and optimize performance
  • Prepare and distribute first aid kits for each team prior to each season and support coaches in maintaining fully stocked first aid kits
  • Collaborate with Human Resources in the training of faculty/staff regarding Adult and Children CPR, First Aid and AED
Coach Support
  • Educate and train coaches on emergency action plans and individual care plans applicable to their team roster
  • Send updates as needed to in-season coaches, including injury reports and contest medical coverage
Records Management
  • Maintain a high level of discretion and professionalism, as it relates to student medical information
  • Maintain records of student-athlete injuries
Athletic Training Room
  • Oversee the operations of Athletic Training areas
  • Organize, take inventory, and replenish Athletic Training supplies and equipment
  • Supervise Athletic Training areas during regular hours to include keeping a clean and organized workspace
School Wellness
  • Work in collaboration with the School Nurse to establish consistent application of health and wellness policies and procedures, as well as best practices
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Athletic Trainer at the high school/college level
  • NATA certification and membership in good standing

  • Proficient technology skills, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Suite, Google Drive, and Outlook
  • Current Adult and Children CPR, First Aid and AED Certification (or the ability to acquire withing 30 days of hire)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to sports medicine
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • 3 or more years of experience as an Athletic Trainer at the high school/college level
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift to 25 pounds in connection with job duties, such as assisting with setup or moving materials.
  • Ability to stand, sit, and move comfortably on campus for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb stairs and navigate uneven surfaces as needed between locations within and outside school buildings.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including inclement weather.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required at times.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary is highly competitive with top independent schools in the region and commensurate with education and experience. Salary range of $32-$42/hour based on skills and qualifications.
