ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
This is a non-supervisory position.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. High school graduate or GED preferred. A minimum of four year's experience as a general or trades maintenance mechanic; or graduation from a recognized trade school and two years of acceptable experience. Journeyman certificate preferred.
Ability to read blueprints, procedure manuals, work orders, equipment operating instructions and general correspondence (ie: memos, letters, etc.). Ability to effectively communicate with staff, students, administration and visitors. Ability to read and accurately complete maintenance requests, time sheets, supply requests, etc.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Requires at least a type 2 refrigerant transition and recovery certification. Journeyman Certificate preferred. Must have valid Driver’s License and ability to meet University’s insurance requirements for driving University vehicles.
Should be skilled in the refrigeration field including installation, trouble shooting and repair of equipment from small appliances to industrial size. Should be skilled in hydronics and other applications of heating and chiller systems. This includes installation, trouble shooting and repair of gas fired furnaces, low-pressure steam boilers, chillers, pumping systems and air handling equipment. Should be skilled in the electrical trade to include trouble shooting of industrial equipment, fixtures and controls. Should be able to design and install electrical fixtures and equipment involved in various construction projects. Should have a working understanding of DDC automated controls, pneumatic controls and other control systems. Should have a general knowledge of computers operations (prefer MicroSoft Word and Excel). Should be knowledgeable of water chemistry including chemical treatments for boilers, closed water loops and condenser and domestic water systems to prevent corrosion and scaling of equipment. Chemical treatment duties consist of training, handling of water treatment chemicals, testing and management of pumps, controls and related equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel including the use of a computer keyboard; reach with hands and arms; work on their feet for several hours at a time; bend, stoop, climb ladder/stairs; and work overhead, using a ladder or scaffolding. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. The employee is occasionally required to climb extension ladders and to work while balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or moving within confined areas including equipment, crawl and attic spaces; and talk or hear including the use of a telephone and 2‑way radio.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Typically, the employee works indoors, in classroom, business office and athletic facility environments with a moderate noise level. Frequently the employee is required to work in the maintenance shop or mechanical rooms working with loud power equipment. Occasionally the employee will be required to work outside the building in inclement weather doing construction, repair and maintenance functions.
