Job summary

Port of South Louisiana is seeking a hands-on maintenance worker to perform routine repairs and upkeep of facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment. The role requires practical repair skills, safe use of hand and power tools, dependability, and attention to detail to keep port operations running smoothly.

Work hours are 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with an appointment type of Probational up to 24 months. Compensation will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

  • One year of experience or training in building trades, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance.
  • Six semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses.

Responsibilities

  • Perform minor repairs to buildings and fixtures including plumbing, carpentry, welding, electrical and painting; operate hand and power tools.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on lawn care equipment and minor vehicle maintenance.
  • Ground maintenance and general facility upkeep including grass cutting and grounds appearance.
  • Operate tractors, a forklift, backhoe and other equipment as needed to support port operations.

Our Mission

The Port of South Louisiana’s mission is to serve the maritime transportation needs of resident industry; assist resident industry in developing maritime and industrial facilities; encourage foreign and domestic investment within the River Parishes Region and Louisiana; and attract foreign and domestic cargo to the Globalplex Intermodal Terminal.

Overview of the Role

This hands-on position performs routine maintenance and repair work supporting the safe operation and upkeep of Port facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment. Success requires practical repair skills, safe operation of tools and equipment, dependability, attention to detail, and the ability to address varied maintenance needs. The position offers the opportunity to perform a broad range of work that directly supports the Port’s facilities and operations.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience or training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance; OR Six semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses.

Job Duties

Job Duties and Other Information

  • Perform minor repairs to buildings and fixtures including plumbing, carpentry, welding, electrical (e.g., replace lighting ballasts, light switches, and outlets), mechanical, and painting; operate hand tools and power equipment (e.g., electric drill, pressure washer, skill saw, table saw, and chain saw); assemble and maintain furniture and new equipment according to manufacturer's instructions; and assist with general repairs to maintain the structural integrity and functionality of Port facilities.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on lawn care equipment (e.g., weed eaters, small engines, and mowers) and perform routine minor vehicle maintenance (e.g., tire repair, replacing wiper blades, and air filters) according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Perform ground maintenance and general facility upkeep including grass cutting on a zero-turn mower, shoveling, and maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of Port grounds and facilities.
  • Operate a tractor with a bush hog with flex wing rotary cutter, a tractor with a spread box blade, a forklift, and a rubber tire backhoe with a loader bucket and a digging bucket.
  • Operate office equipment including computer, printer, and scanner as needed to support departmental functions; and perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Position Specific Details

Appointment Type: Probational - up to 24 months

Career Progression: This position does not participate in a Career Progression Group.

Work Schedule: Work hours are 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday.

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
