Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) seeks a mechanic to repair mobile equipment at Ouachita Parish Unit 071. You will diagnose and repair engines, hydraulics and drive systems, with supervision from the Mechanic Supervisor B.

Work hours are 6:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday-Thursday. A Class D Chauffeur's License is required before appointment; physical lifting up to 50 pounds; duties include shop and field repairs and possible disaster support.

Qualifications

  • No experience or training required.
  • Makes repairs to heavy and light duty mobile equipment including tune-ups, overhauls and rebuilds.
  • Performs diagnostic tests and repairs using a wide range of computerized testing equipment.
  • Performs engine tune ups and common repairs to cooling systems, suspensions, and hydraulic systems.
  • May be required to perform other duties including emergency/disaster support activities.

Responsibilities

  • Mends heavy and light duty mobile equipment, including tune-ups and overhauls.
  • Uses scanners, analyzers, testers and other diagnostic equipment for repairs.
  • Performs engine tune ups and fixes cooling and suspension systems.
  • Assists mechanics in training and in field and shop repairs.
  • Handles other duties as needed including disaster response.

The overall function of this position is to repair mobile equipment and/or smaller equipment with PC #'s owned by LA DOTD. This position is located in District 05/Operations/Unit 071/Ouachita Parish and reports directly to the Mechanic Supervisor B.

The Incumbent May Be Required To Possess The Following Specialized Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, As Well As To Maintain The Following Licensing And Operate The Following Equipment:

  • Possess and maintain a Class D Chauffeur's License before appointment
  • Required to operate passenger vehicles, rollback wrecker, heavy equipment when necessary, computers, cell phone, and mobile radios
  • Working knowledge of using various hand tools, power tools, impact tools, diagnostic computers and tools, air conditioning recovery systems, presses, auto lifts, and some hydraulic testing equipment
  • Required to sit, squat, walk, bend, and climb
  • Ability to lift a maximum of fifty (50) pounds. Manual lifting of more than fifty (50) pounds requires assistance.

  • Makes repairs to heavy and light duty mobile equipment including tune-ups, overhauls and rebuilds. Diagnoses include but are not limited to engines, final drives, transmissions, hydraulic systems, drive lines, cooling systems, suspensions and fuel system repairs.
  • Performs diagnostic tests and repairs using a wide range of computerized testing equipment that include scanners, engine and exhaust analyzers, ampere and volt testers, fuel pressure and hydraulic pressure testing equipment, and electrical and computerized ignition systems testing equipment.
  • Performs engine tune ups and common repairs to cooling systems, suspensions systems, and hydraulic manual brake systems.
  • Gives assistance to mechanics in training as well as making repairs in shop and the field.
  • May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/ disaster support activities.
